rf to ff-- seat opinions???

Hello ladies-

My 3 1/2 year old is RF in a Britax Diplomat. He is 30 lbs and 38 nearing 39 inches. His head recently hit the 1 inch mark below top of shell. The seat limits are 35 lbs rf and 40 lbs/40 inch ff. I'm planning on replacing it with a Frontier 85. Which is the better bet for ff-- squeaking out another month or 2 with the Diplomat in FF or just buying the Frontier now?

Thanks,

Sherry

The Britax Frontier 85 is on sale right now at most stores for 20% off, so if you think you'll need it soon it might be smart to buy one now.

Have you tried him forward facing in this seat? The height limit is a guideline. A forward facing seat is out grown one of 3 ways. 1

Thank you for the replies!

I haven't tried DS forward yet, I was planning on switching the seats around this weekend (along with a much needed car cleaning....) I'm assuming he'll have some amount of time left in this Britax but I guess what I was really trying to find out is if anybody knows if there is a safety difference in a convertible seat in FF mode vs a seat (like the frontier) that was designed for FF??

No I don't believe there is a safety difference. A 5 pt harness seat whither a convertible or a combo seat with a 5pt harness forward facing is just as safe. Know when the 5 pt harness is taken off the seat then there is a step down in safety. I was just pointing out if you are not just ready to buy a new seat you still have a little more time left. Dawn

The forward-facing car seats have to pass the same tests. So both a convertible and a forward-facing only seat where tested in the ff position and they both passed the test. We don't have information about how well they did on the tests though since that information is not released.

However there were some tests performed on the Britax convertibles in Canada and some of the Britax seats did not do as well forward-facing. From what I remember, it seemed like it was with heavier children who were near the weight limit of the seat at higher speeds. There were no recalls associated with these tests or anyone saying that ff Britax seats were definitely not safe. Personally, I've made the decision to keep my DD in her Britax Decathlon. She is only 37lbs at 41in tall at 5y7m. Her small size definitely figured into my decision.

Thanks again ladies!!

That was the info I was hoping for-- I just wanted to make sure. Now I have to try out the FF facing fit for our Diplomat and see how it goes!!
