Going for Gold

Hey there all!

My name's Rae. I'm 25, unmarried, living with my boyfriend and two happy cats. I've just recently really gotten my life together. After a short but miserable time in my life, I got a permanent job that I love, and I just recently got a new car that actually runs. But during that dark time, when I had no money and less hope, I put on weight rather than hurt myself in any other fashion. My boyfriend held me up out of the darkness as well as he could, but food was the crutch I used to keep going forward. Because of that, I hit my all-time highest weight of 209.

However, getting my job kicked me out of depression, and getting a permanent position at that job kicked me into high gear. I started wanting things, and once I'd gotten completely out of all debt, I realized that I was doing well enough to deserve them. So I got a Wii Fit, a gym membership, and started buying $3.00 SmartOnes and Lean Cuisine meals instead of $1.00 instant noodles.

I started out slow, too scared of the risk of repeated failure to try too hard. Figured out weight watchers points through online resources, and started eating an average of 30 points a day, mainly by switching my convenience meals from frozen pizza, ramen, and taco bell, to frozen calorie-controlled portions. Then I started doing half an hour or so of Wii Fit. The 30 points a day decreased to 27, with my "cheat day" being Fridays at Sweet Tomatoes.

I got the car two weeks ago (back in debt we go! but for a much better reason) and have since been able to take myself to the gym before work 5 days a week. I almost laughed out loud when I hit a sprint of 9 mph on the elliptical, and I'm following a 12-week program that will let me work myself up towards running a full half hour at a time. I quit caffeine over a week ago, and am building up towards quitting soda entirely.

So far I've lost a full jeans size. I've seen 189 on the scale on a low water weight day, so I'm almost up to 20 lbs gone, though my ticker tracker goes by my trend weight. As soon as I'm free of soda, it should be easy to drop my points that little bit lower.

I have three goals of dropping 30 lbs. each. At 180, I'll be the weight I was when I graduated college and met my boyfriend. At 150, I'll be the weight I was at my healthiest, when I graduated high school. And at 120, which is healthy for my 5'4" frame, I'll be skinny. Something I've never seen before, but why not? If my body's up for it, so is my willpower. I'm so strong right now I don't even know what to do with it all. Like our friendly neighborhood Olympians, I'm going for gold.

So that's me. I just wanted to stop by to share my story with like-minded individuals, and to read the thoughts and stories of other people with my interests. Good luck, everyone. My thoughts and hopes are with you all.

Good afternoon, Rae, and welcome aboard. I must say, I LOVE your winning (losing??LOL) attitude! Coming from a background where I was depressed for most of my adolescence/young adulthood, I understand how food can become solace (and then just become habit). Congrats on getting out from under it and on your 20 pounds so far!!! Congrats on the exercise, too. That is SO key to losing.

I hope you find in our circle of buddies the encouragement and accountability you seek. With your positive outlook and past experience, you will be a great source of inspiration and I hope you stick around. I look forward in celebrating our successes together. I am re-focused and enjoying a total renewal of spirit right now, and plan to lose
