How is your day going so far?  I hope you're having a ton of merry!  I'm going to be packing and leaving for my parents' house for a few days, so I may be a little scarce, but I couldn't leave without wishing you the biggest, best, most joyful Christmas ever!!

I hope you have a lovely time at the folks' place, K! Don't worry about us, we'll try not to destroy the place in the post-Christmas madness. ;o)

Hello, Karen & Roni! Blast from the past...I used to be "sassygrrl", and you threw a baby shower for me (7.5 years ago!).

My life has spiraled out of control & I'm making some pretty drastic changes to get things on course again (leaving my husband, for starters).

My weight? I'm a yo-yo, just like everyone else. I've been as high as 227, as low as 172. I'm hovering at 199-ish right now; my personal life has taken a toll on my appetite the past couple of weeks...for once in my life I seem to have some degree of control over stress eating (I'm good for 1 meal a day, and I don't snack anymore). Not saying that's healthy, or a good thing in any way, it's just the reality of my life right now.

I'm hoping to find some stability here, and some motivation to exercise (someone tell me how to tap into the stress relieving portion of exercise, plz!)

Hope everyone is having a Merry Christmas! Despite my turmoil, we've had a good day together.Lori

Happy day after Christmas Gretal. How did your holiday go? Ours was busy but really good. Although I enjoyed my day I am so glad that it is over and I am ready to focus on losing weight. So I have been meaning to ask you how many calories do you eat each day? I am trying to figure out how many I need and still be able to lose weight. I also dont know how much exercise I should get. Do you have any suggestions?

Hey buddy! My holiday was great. I told myself that because I knew I'd really be buckling down after the holiday, that I could eat however much I wanted for a bit. So I did and peeked my head back into the 170s, unfortunately. But today I was back on track and ready to go! I went to the gym and they got new treadmills that let me do a "5k trail run" - it was totally fun and it got me burning a lot of calories. I'll be jumping through the 160s in no time!

Even with the weight increase, I wouldn't have changed a thing. It was nice not worrying about the calories and whatnot for a bit. And although I think I ate three cookies one day, I didn't harp on it. I enjoyed them and that was it. And spending the holiday at home with Todd was great. No rush, just hung out, ate when we wanted, and opened gifts.

Anyways, about your question...I eat anywhere from 1400-1600 calories a day when I'm being good. I don't try to stay at any point in there, just try to make it in that range. I like the wiggle room for an extra snack if need be. I think that's a good range for me when I'm working out about 3-4 days a week. This is when I'm doing "lighter" workouts, though - I mean each workout being 20-30 minutes on the elliptical with 10 minutes or so of weights and ab workouts afterward.

I think playing around with the numbers is probably your best bet. It took me a long time to figure out what worked for me. So consider choosing a range and then using it for a few weeks to see if it works. Then if it doesn't maybe up it or lower it. You'll figure it out, I'm sure!

As for the exercise, what's your overall goal? I've realized my goal is to get to just about my absolute lowest. So I'm going to be doing pretty rough workouts for a bit to get this last bit off my body. But if I just wanted to get to where I'm at now or a little lower - just into the healthy range for the BMI - then I'd say just a few workouts a week. Enough to get the heart rate up, and with a high intensity, but not to the point of overworking yourself. Even 20-30 minutes is great. You don't want to hurt yourself or exhaust yourself, ya know? I'd say commit to something like 25 minutes of medium to high intensity 3 days a week. Then up it if you aren't seeing results.

I think probably the hardest part of everything is finding what works for you - both with your busy schedule and with how your body responds. But just give it time and a little effort and you'll find your rhythm!

Hey Gretal, Ive only got a moment, I just got home from school and Mike and I are getting ready to go out for some us time. But I wanted to thank you for your advice. I'm so glad that you had a good holiday as well. I will get with you later about the plan that I had in mind. Take care and I should be back on either tonight but most definitely tomorrow. Thanks again and have a good night.
