Our new challenge: March to March!

Hey, Buddies!  How would you like to join me on a march to March?  In other words, for this challenge were going to walk/jog/run as many miles as we can – starting on February 1 and going through February 28.  This will be the first year of what I hope will be a yearly event where we try to improve on the mileage total of the year before.

Here are the details:

-          Every day in February I will post a “March to March” checkpoint post.  Under that post, we all can post the number of miles we ran/walked/jogged that day.  The walking/jogging/running can be done on the street, in your house, on a treadmill, on a track – whatever!  I will keep the total, and we’ll see just how high we can push it by the end of the month.

-          I will post the address of a ticker for our signatures that keeps track of our progress throughout the month.

-          This challenge is a little different because we’re not competing with each other – which is also a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong. ;o)  This time we will be working together to come up with the first total to beat in the Annual March to March Challenge.

-          For those buddies who don’t have access to something that measures your mileage, I looked up the following info so you can estimate the number of miles you’ve logged every day:

o        “In my experience it depends on your health and what you are carrying if you:

walk slowly = 20-25 mins per mile
walk briskly = 17-20 mins per mile
walk fast = 13-17 mins per mile
jog = 9-13 mins per mile
run = 5-9 mins per mile

Remember the average person will have a slower overall speed as distance is increased. If you add weight (like if you were to backpack) you can expect a significantly slower speed. If you add elevation changes your average speed will drop. if you add rough terrain or obstacles or low visibility you will subliminally slow down in order to process what you are seeing and where you are stepping.  ”

o        (For counting steps)  â€œ Here's a simple way to determine your own stride. Place a 100' measuring tape on the ground. Starting at 0, walk the length of the tape and count how many steps it takes you to cover the 100'. Try to walk in a comfortable stride. Do this three times and take the average. This is how many steps it will take you to walk 100'. There are 5,281' in one mile. So divide 5,281 by your average stride to get the number of steps you take to walk one mile.
Example:
It takes me 36 steps to walk 100 feet
100 divided by 36 = 2.8 feet (That's my natural stride, I am a short female!))
5281 divided by 2.8 = 1885.7 (So I take about 1885 steps to cover one mile.)

It can be very helpful to know your stride. You can get a rough idea of distances just by stepping it off then multiplying the number of steps times your average stride. I am an engineer, and use this method often to estimate distances.”  (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/478043 )

So, who would like to join me on a march to March?  If we all work together, we can march our way into the month of March with fewer pounds on our bodies, stronger healthier muscles, and great big springy smiles on our faces!

:o) - Karen

Hi!

This challenge is really more about foot travel -- walking, running, jogging, etc.

Oh sure...I can do that. I do my walkjogs separately anyway. Happy to help with your challenge.
