Pro-circ's: Would you pay out of pocket?

The recent discussions on President Obama's desire to move the U.S. towards universal health care has got me wondering:

If your insurance no longer covered circumcision, would your reasons still be compelling enough to have the procedure done or would you leave your sons intact at that point?

I can't answer this question since I wouldn't do it anyway but you're new it seems so I wanted to say welcome. :) Good first question.

In a heartbeat! What's $200 or $300? A dinner out or a lifetime of health benefits for the little dude!

Thank you. : )

This is the first time I've posted since before my son was born, so it's been awhile!

Then welcome back, Allison! And you posed an interesting question. It's a shame we don't have more pro-circ or pro-parental choice advocates here. But one has replied...

I am against RIC now but did have both my boys circ'd at the time they were born because of lack of true education about the issue.

I think that, at the time, if we had been told that we would have to pay $200 to $300 out of pocket to get the procedure done it would've at least made us think a little bit more about it.

What part of Canada are you from?

I was really hoping that it would cost at least $500 or something; I'm surprised it is in the $200 - $300 range. : (

I also wish that insurance would stop covering it. I read somewhere that once Britain (?) or some place stopped paying for circumcisions that there was a dramatic decrease in the number performed.

Thanks for your replies so far. : )

This probably requires a separate thread but I get such a mixed picture from Canada. Some say it's occurs frequently other say not at all. Clearly it's regionally dependent but I am wondering what the driving factor is region to region since virtually no one pays for it there anymore. I heard that the more liberal coastal provinces the rates are very low but in the interior provinces it's higher but I rarely see numbers much in excess of 50%.

I can't answer for myself since
1. I'm British
2. I'm pro-intact

But on another board, I've read the posts of a woman who describes herself as pro-circ but she didn't get her boys done because of the cost. She's canadian (or at least lives in Canada).
