Throat Pain....very scary
| Wed, 02-18-2004 - 1:22am |
Hey all, its been awhile since my last post, but my recovery is going well. I haven't thrown-up in 3 months. I have some major concerns about my throat though. I was bulimic for about 9 or 10 months, and I never really binged or stuck my fingers down my throat or anything, instead my vomit would come up in mouthfuls (YUCK i know, sorry about the details.) But anyways, lately i've been having this weird throat pain, mostly on the left side of my throat. Sometimes it feels like there's something in there and its hard for me to swallow. It feels like my throat is really swollen and tight near the top but then it feels completly fine a few hours later. Its only really been hurting this past week or so, and i haven't vommited at all. When this happens its really scary and i get kind of panicky which I think makes it worse, and i just try to calm myself down. I've heard about peoples esophagus's having tears and rupturing and stuff like that which is really really frightening. Im only 18, though im not living with my parents, and i want to go to the doctor to at least get some piece of mind. Im not sure what to do though because i don't want my parents to find out or anything and i'm still on their insurance plan. Im not sure if doctors have to keep certain things confidential or not so im worried about contacting them. If anyone has any knowledge regarding this throat thing or had similar experiences, if you have any advice about the whole doctor situation I would be so greatful for your help. Thanks so much.
love and prayers to all of you

Yikes! I'd be a little freaked, too. Something like that happened to me about a month ago, but it was only one day. It sounded a lot like you described, as though something were stuck in my throat. Or that aching feeling you get when you're trying desperately not to cry. I panicked too! But it never happened again, so I'm not sure what to make of it. However, I don't know anyone who's had a similar experience and it could be something totally unrelated to the ED. Congratulations on your recovery and accomplishments so far-- that's really commendable.
The good news is, your doctors MUST keep EVERYTHING confidential because you are 18! Unless you're, you know, suicidal or unconscious or utterly psycho and in danger of harming yourself or someone else. But they are required to obtain your signature before discussing anything with your parents or even any other doctor/ professional. So you can let them (parents) know what you want them to know.
Keep up the good work and get this thing checked out. I hope it turns out to be something completely fix-able!
Love and prayers,
Starfish
If you are still paranoid about the confidentiality (though I am pretty sure the information about it is correct, since you are 18)...
Are you going to college? Does it have a clinic or is there a community clinic where you can go that the doctors' are no or very little cost -- and they wouldn't know your parents?
Hi wave_angel,
Good to hear from you and congratuations on your progress. Three months is awesome.
Like starfish said, your doctor MUST keep everything confidential so I would definitely have it checked out. I assume if it had to do with purging, then your throat would have started hurting sooner. It may just be a case of strep throat which can be gotten rid of with meds.
Please let us know what the doctor says.
Love & hugs, Kristina
