Having a difficult time (triggers)

I had an eating disorder when I was around 16 (I am 27 now) but I am finding that even if it goes away for a while it seems to keep coming back. I am having a really difificult time right now because I have been sick and I am all excited that I have lost a few pounds and now it is like I don't want to eat too much and if I do I want to purge. My question is does an eating disorder ever truly go away or is it something that you have to fight the rest of your life. It is so difficult to keep fighting.

Hi Angela,
I am glad you posted here to get some support. I personally feel that an eating disorder will always be a part of you but only to a small degree. I feel that you can get to the point where you like yourself and your body the way it is, and you eat for nourishment with occasional splurges without beating yourself up over it, and you can have a normal life. The thing that might remain with you is that when things get tough or you feel stressed your natural response may be to turn to ED, but you won't.
If you have never had therapy I would recommend it highly. It's good to meet with someone who can help you deal with emotional issues. Until you get those resolved, your ED will be an issue for you.

You sound a lot like me... I'm 30, had an ED at 17-18 and I don't think it ever really goes away... for me it's an obsession with perfectionism/control that comes and goes depending on what is going on in my life... I too feel like I am comfortable with my weight for the first time in YEARS (and I got this way by eating healthy and exercising - no ED but NOW I feel the ED tendencies creeping up again as I feel this obsession to stay my current weight! Does that make sense?
