Is this a problem?

Hello all. I always figured I was not a candidate for developing an eating disorder. A) I'm not a control freak, and B) I weigh over 200 pounds, courtesy of mood stabilizers. But, last January, I moved across country to be closer to my boyfriend. I started developing a weird pattern. I would first not be hungry, then skip a meal. Then, I would feel good about skipping the meal. This started happening a lot. Yesterday, I ate a meal at McDonald's, a little salami, and some fruit juice, and that was it for the whole day.

I promised my bf that this morning I would get up and eat breakfast. I was not hungry. But, I did open the fridge and eat some grapes. It was all I could manage.

Do I have anything to worry about?

To me it sounds like you're starting some odd habits that should be stopped before they start any problems. Even if you eat just because you see something that you want. I will tell you it's not an easy process to stop once you've gotten in the habit of doing. I had a hard time over coming it and it's not a fun process. Please for your own health eat some more food than just one small meal a day. That's unhealthy.

Hi - it does sound like there is something going on. It is definitely not healthy to eat one tiny meal a day. I would examine if you are having physical problems or if you are struggling with something emotional which is leading to the desire to starve. Either way, I would address the problem with either a medical doctor or a therapist.

Hi Beth,

Your description makes me think there is a medical problem. A change in appetitve, especially for no apparent reason, is usually a symptom of something else going on. Even if skipping meals "makes you feel good" and now seems more voluntary than when it began, it's still possible that there's an underlying medical problem. Remember, physical/ medical issues can cause changes in your thinking.

It may also be that you need to adjust your mood stabilizers (if you're still on them). Those things have a big impact on appetite and weight. In any event, sounds to me like you better get a checkup. Be sure to focus on hormones, including thyroid.

Take care and check back with us,
