Long Term Health Effects of Anorexia

Hi.

I developed anorexia when I was 18. I have been recovered from it for about 5 years, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any long term effects of it and what they are.

I've never been very strong physically, but ever since I did that damage to my body, I've noticed that I have less stamina than before.

Thanks for any input.

Hi Morticia_7180,

Our overview on anorexia is at:

http://www.ivillagehealth.com/library/nwh/content/0,,215912_227063,00.html

According to this link:

Half of all women suffering from anorexia nervosa never fully regain their health. A third remain chronically ill.

However, it also says:

4. An eating disorder will not go away without treatment. Eating disorders are mental illnesses that can be deadly if not treated and are difficult to recover from; but many women have recovered successfully and gone on to live full and satisfying lives.

Others on this board can help with their first-hand experiences regarding their health after recovery.

Hi moriticia_7180,

I agree with Ruth Ann that you should probably see a doctor. While it is true that anorexia can cause long term health problems, there could be something else that's causing your lack of stamina. You may just be deficient in a vitamin or mineral or you are not eating the right foods to give you the stamina you need. It doesn't hurt to have some blood tests done, maybe get a hair analysis and see what's going on.
