Is this really true?

I read that when someone binges and then purges, over half of the calories are still absorbed. Is that true? I asked one therapist and she said it wasn't true. But then another therapist said that it could possibly be true. I'm just curious. I don't beleive it is true because always in the past when I would binge, and then purge, I felt like I got everything out. Not to be gross, but, I know what I put in me, and I saw it all come out. (I'm really sorry if that's gross!!!) So, I don't understand how it could be true. Does anybody know if it is or not? Thanks.

Hi Kristy,

To be honest, I am really not sure if this is true or not. My guess is that it is impossible to get every last morsel of food back out. It would also depend on whether you make yourself vomit immediatlely after eating or whether you wait a while. More importantly however, I would try to focus on what purging does to the rest of your body from messing up your electrolyte balance and your teeth all the way up to it causing major health problems which can eventually kill you.

Are you in therapy at all? If not, I highly recommend that you try to find a therapist and work on your recovery. Life is too precious and too short Sweetie to live with ED. I know right now it may seem overwhelming, but recovery IS possible and I can't put into words how much better life is without ED. To have the freedom to eat a meal without feeling guilt or fear, to feel good about the way you look, to eat without purging, to exercise for health, not to burn off what you just ate...the list is endless. A therapist can help you uncover WHY you have an ED and then help you recover.
