Wow, how timely. I was just thinking about that this morning. Our family does a sit-down meal, in fact a series of them over the course of the four-day vacation period, usually at an isolated ranch in the foothills. It's really hard to exercise there, and there's always too much food everywhere! What a relief though ... this year we're going to an urban location, staying someplace familiar, and I can run as much as I want. So, hopefully this year's Thanksgiving will be managable.

Hiya, so-cal!

I think it's going to be important to have "outs" -- to get away from the food, and sometimes, certain people if the going gets rough.

Hi so_cal_runner,

Something that was recommended in OA meetings was to fix one plate with normal portions (that also includes making sure you eat enough) then sitting down and eating it. If you want more, go put more on your plate and then sit down and eat it rather than standing around the food table, snacking while standing around, etc.

I hope you will have a wonderful time and allow yourself to eat and also relax.

Love & hugs, Kristina

My husband and I will be on a 4-day Caribbean cruise which leaves on Thanksgiving Day. There will be many sit-down dinners and my guess is they will have a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner for us on Thursday. There is also a buffet restaurant which we typically go to for lunch and breakfast (we have cruised several times now). I typically do ok on these cruises (thank you God) and allow myself a splurge day on the last day.

That is an interesting question... I'm not much of a big eater in general especially around other people; I get self-conscious and tend to eat less. So most Thanksgivings I get the typical Southern family insult: You eat like a bird! We usually do buffet style too, but I'm very conscious of going back up and getting seconds.
This year is different though... going to another relative's house (and having to fly BY MYSELF to get there... hello anxiety?). Probably doing a sit-down dinner too... not to mention all the other meals around my family while I stay with them. My family is used to seeing me eat small portions though and I've been telling them lately I had a stomach virus so I should be okay.
The closest I came to purging was one Thanksgiving when my grandfather kept piling food on my plate and I felt bad for not eating it so I did and then I swear I was thisclose to getting rid of it but my family would have heard me.

You're right - it is really fortunate that the whole family can be together for four days. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip, Kristina. This sounds like a good one for the meal portion. Family meals (with the extended family) always involve appetizers too. All the cheeses and crackers always look so tempting. Those are what get me...it's either all or nothing with those. Once I start, I feel like I can't stop. If I don't have the appetizers, they sit there torturing because I'm so drawn to them. I've been working on a strategy for those too, and I'm thinking I will introduce the family to this new low-fat cheese I like. It's in the 'safe' food category right now.

Your cruise sounds like lots of fun. Have a wonderful time!

OMG -- the post gremlins have hit -- I just lost my entire post!!!

Call the post police!

Anyway, so_cal, I was going to say some planning could help -- you could plan to have something before the meal even starts, do some breathing, tell yourself you can get through it without losing control.

Also, you could always take a break during the meal for a minute or to, and do the same thing.

Are those some things you think you could do?

Bummer about your post - thanks for taking the time to re-type.

I think the self-assurance prior to, and breaks if need be during mealtime, are doable. It just sucks that it is an ordeal and not something that I can sit comfortably through. I have good days and bad days, so I'll just have to make sure I do everything I can to make Thanksgiving a good day. Just found out we have to change our travel plans and fly late in the morning that day, so I won't have to be around during pre-mealtime. That will be nice. I'll arrive just in time to sit for the meal. That may take care of the appetizer problem too (and if it doesn't, I can always go for a walk during appetizer time and blame it on the fact that I need to stretch after traveling).

Anyway, thanks again for the tips. It's sad (because we're in this situation), yet comforting to know that we can relate to one another with the "what's the family thinking at the dinner table" feeling while they watch us eat and/or get up from the table to use the restroom.

And, can I ask a posting question - what does "lol" stand for? I have my guesses, but I thought I'd ask to make sure? Thanks.
