Hey,
As I said before I've been bulimic off and on for about a year. This past weekend my parents came from a different state that I live in, and celebrated the holidays with the family. My mom isn't too thin, but she lost weight after each of us three kids. Ever since I had started school I have been basicly thin. I can remember going over 100 lbs when I was about in fifth grade and five foot tall. This made me feel fat. So I started to refuse deserts and seconds for supper and lunch. I also remember running as hard as I could in gym class to loose some weight. I was in sports until I was a senior in high school and became clinically depressed. I packed on fifteen pounds in a short time because of the meds they made me take. Since then I have packed on about thirty lbs and have lost it and packed it on again. The last year I began to purge after eating. I asked my mom last week how she stays so thin. She told me to only eat lettuce salads and excercise more. I don't want to continue purging because of the dental problems. I've tried to stop in the past, I might be able to this time. Any advice or comments is appreciated.

Hi There,
It sounds like you are really struggling with this. And while I am sure your Mom meant well, I don't agree with the advice she has given you. It sounds like she has her own body image and/or food issues. Our bodies need a lot more than just lettuce salads - you need a good balance of healthy proteins (chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, etc.), carbohydrates (preferably veggies and fruit), fat (olive oil, butter, coconut oil, flax seed oil, etc.), and some nuts and seeds. If you nourish your body with adequate fuel your metabolism will increase and you will loose weight provided you need to lose weight.
Given the fact that you have been bingeing and purging I would also recommend seeing a qualified therapist to talk about any repressed emotional issues. Eating Disorders are not about food or your body, they are about underlying emotional issues that have not been dealt with.
And of course you can keep posting here for support and encouragment. You should not be going through this by yourself.
Love & hugs, Kristina

Hi came2006,
Exactly as Kristina has said, you should not be alone in this.
