I went to my doctor's appointment

Well, I went to my doctor's appointment yesterday to begin the process of recovery. It went very well. I could tell that she knew exactly waht was going on by the way she asked me different questions, but she was waiting for me to tell her. I did tell her I was there because I knew I had an eating disorder and told her about the counseling intake for next week. She was pleased that I was acknowledging the problem and that we were on the way to getting better. She did a full physical exam and I had to give a urine sample and they took blood. SHe did an EKG in the office and I have to have an echocardiogram and a bone density scan next week. She will follow up with me in a month and in the meantime I will go to counseling and she and the counselor and I will decide on possibly starting a short term therapy of adding and antidepressant medication too. I have never taken anything like that and am nervous about it. Has anyone taken an antidepressant and found it to be helpful? I am also worried about side effects. The doctor said it can really help with overcoming some of the emotional difficulties with eating. Anyway, I am feeling like there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks for listening.

Hi there,

Thanks for checking in and giving an update. It sounds very, very positive and I am glad you took this step.

Everybody is different and it's hard to say how the antidepressents will work for you. I personally did not like them and went off of them, but then I don't like being on meds in general. However, I had a sponsor in OA who was on a low dose of Prozac I believe and she loved it. She said it helped her recover and just kept her calm and able to work through things. You just have to decide for yourself if you want to try it and remember if they don't work you can always stop using them and the worst that can happen is that you are in the same place emotionally where you were when you started.

Love & hugs, Kristina
