I just got out of the hospital last week for treatment for a form of bulimia (complicated, I know... i threw up what little I put in my mouth). I'd been doing good for a week but then tonite I threw up all my dinner, which is pretty much all I ate today. I am so mad at myself!! I ALMOST DIED FROM THIS! I JUST GOT OUT OF THE HOSPITAL! And I'm doing the same thing that practically killed me. Its like i couldn't help myself. I don't know what to do. Are relapses even common? How do you prevent them?

Hi dr2th,

I am sorry you are struggling, but relapses ARE common. Actually, I would even go so far as to say that they are a normal part of recovery. I don't know anybody who has gone through recovery without any relapses at all. Like Diana already pointed out, it would be good if you would work with a qualified therapist. I know you would think that because you almost died you could just stop, but EDs and other addictions just aren't that simple. Unless you deal with the underlying emotional issue that led to your ED to begin with, you will not recover.

Do you currently have a therapist? If not, would you be able to make an appointment with one?

Welcome back It must feel good to be out of the hospital. I just want to say that relapses are very common, it kind of g oes along with the territory. So just hang in there and keep posting here you will find lots of support. Also, find yourself a good therapist who specializes in eating disorders because that makes a huge difference. Hang in there!
