I was wondering if anyone could give me a ball-park idea about how much a 5'5'' 20 year old girl should weigh? And what would be considered underweight for this height?

Thanks...

Hi Nicole,

Between 113 and 149 are the numbers that I have. Below 113 would most definately be too small. It also depends on your frame though. Would you say that you are a large, medium or small boned person? Very petite frame people could get away with 113, but large frame people like myself (bigger ankles and wrists - you actually measure your elbow bone to find this) could never exist at 113 and I am only 5'3". People start telling me that I am getting too thin when I get to about 135. I can see my ribs at that weight.

I think the ideal weight is probably the weight where you still have a rounded, female form, muscle tone, and not too much excess fat. This may be different for you than for someone else. What clothing size are you now?

BL,
Thanks so much for your prompt reply!! I really appreciate it. Here is some more specific info...

I am definitely a small boned person. Previously, I weighed 125lbs and wore a size 5-6 jeans. But I have dropped to 115 and am wearing a 3 now. I have lost this weight in a month. Do you think this is a dangerous weight for me? Being so busy with school and work, I started minimizing my food intake to a great degree. I didn't even really mean to at first... it was like i just didnt have time to eat if that makes any sense to you. And then I starting noticing a difference when I looked in the mirror and now I feel like I am avoiding food. Do you think that is an unhealthy amt of weight to lose in that time... ten pounds in a month? Also, you mentioned that 113lbs is probably dangerous. Do you think that it would be dangerous for me to drop below that?

Thanks a bunch ~~nichole

Hi Nichole,

I would say that it is time to stop dieting. If you really feel happy, healthy and energetic where you are now, then you should try to start eating a little more, but continue eating healthy to maintain that weight.

As for losing the weight in a month, that is about 2.5 lbs per week - but everyone loses more in the beginning before they level out. I think if you continue to lose at this rate then it is too fast.

What are other people saying about how you look? Has anyone expressed concern?

Hi there & welcome to the board.

While your questions are important, this is a support forum for people who are recovering from eating disorders.

The kinds of questions you're asking, are things that nobody here can give you a good, qualified answer for.
