hi everyone-
im an 18 year old high school senior and over the past year ive lost about 30 pounds, going from around 150 to 115-120...i wasnt very overweight before (im 5'6) but i lost it because i wasnt happy with myself...now i think i look fine, i dont want to lose any more weight, and im trying to keep my eating habits really healthy. im concerned because i havent had a period for about four months (since i weighed about 125) and im scared...i really dont know who to talk to about it. ive been keeping track of all my vitamin intake (iron, calcium, etc) to make sure im getting enough but still...nothing. i was thinking maybe stress is playing a part in it...college apps and everything? im really happy with the way i look now, so i dont think im anorexic but i just dont know what to do about my period of lack thereof...any comments would be greatly greatly appreciated!!! thanks

Hi there :-)

There can be so many reasons why your periods have stopped that are not related to weight. Please see your primary care doctor as soon as possible to see what might be the cause for the amenorrhea.

Good luck!

It will come back if you're eating. I was 140lbs and dropped to 110lbs and I stopped getting my period. I've been 110-115lbs for the past 4 years but my period has been back and regular for the past 2 years. My body is now more used to this weight so I can actually eat more now and stay at this weight than I could before.

You probably wont like to hear this, but if youre not getting your period, you are not at a healthy weight. if i were you, i would talk to your doctor about finding a weight that you are both happy and healthy at. in terms of eating disorders, some warning signs are if, after you reach your "goal" weight, you still feel compulsions to lose weight and restrict your caloric intake. Eating disorders are not as superficial as just appearance or numbers on a scale. They are more about deeper rooted problems and attempts to seek control. I would really examine your motivations to lose weight. It is something that you are doing for fitness or confidence, or is it filling some emotional void in your life that you can not fill by any other means?
Trust me, i speak from experience: An eating disorder is not a route you want to go down-- even if it means losing those last couple of pounds. My eating disorder got me down to my lowest weight, but in return it plagued me with obsessiveness, depression, and self-hatred. IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!!
I hope this helps.

That's not true. She could be at a healthy weight. It may just take some time to get her body to adjust. And if you keep going up and down with weight, that can stop your period, too. If she keeps gaining weight quickly because she thinks it isn't high enough to get her period, that could also stop it from coming.

I would stick it out if you HONESTLY think you're being healthy at the moment and eating enough. Get your nutrition checked out, too. Sometimes if you're low in iron your period can stop and you may be if you have been anorexic.
