Hi, everyone--

I thought I would introduce myself. I'm almost 30, and food/weight/control issues have been part of my life since I was 8 and first embarassed about my weight compared to other girls in my 2nd grade class. It only became symptomatic (b/p) when I was 18 and at college. I went for treatment, medicince, "got better." But, as some of you might be able to identify with, I didn't feel any different in my head--I just didn't have to worry about electrolyte imbalances anymore. Last year I started again--long story. I dealt with that, but recently I've been so negative and hateful toward my body...I'm afraid of where that might go. I thought if I could just talk and listen to you guys, it might help. Good luck to everyone in getting and staying healthy. I look forward to getting to know you all.

peace love joy

Hello freestar! Welcome to the board!

Thank you for your introduction. I hope that everyone who checks out the board leaves with something - support, a shoulder to lean on, and/or understanding. I've been in your position when you look/think of yourself and just can't think anything good. Sometimes it's easy for me to rationalize my way out of that thought process and sometimes I feel like it's impossible. My best advice to you is to take those extremely difficult moments one at a time. Take it minute by minute, etc. Sometimes that's the only way to get through it with your mind and spirit in one piece. Try to focus on something positive. Anything. Build up those little things and it eventually it can lead to better thinking.

Recovery is a lifelong process. It's something that one works on everyday. Some days are easier than others. Keep your hope and faith that things will get better.

I hope that you keep checking in with us and

Hi there, freestar, my name is Diana, and I'd like to welcome you to the board as well :)

You're smart to come over and share what's going on.

Thanks for the welcome, you two!

I agree with everything you've said. Recovering is something that happens every day--an ongoing process, not an end stage where all problems magically disappear. And I do think that the hard days tend to occur in tandem with other challenges that I'm nervous about in my life. This definitely happens when I'm uncertain of my ability, but I think it also happens because I'm afraid of what success might mean. I want a life very different from the rest of my family; although I'm proud of the choices they've made and paths they've taken, I feel meant to do something else. So I think I associate "success" with a diminishing connection to them. This is not an unfounded fear--it's happened as I've progressed through graduate school. But increasing autonomy from one's family is also part of our cultural expectation of "growing up." I feel like I shouldn't be afraid of that. This semester promises to be an intense one; I'm hoping to just get through it.
