Do you think that the media fuels eating disorders? Do you think that entertainment industry puts too much emphasis on unattainable perfection?

Here's an article about media and eating disorders:

I can't speak for other girls and women, but I think that ultimately, I need to take responsibility for my own behavior. While the media images of thin girls and women does affect the way that I see myself, I'm the only one who can control my response to it. I don't believe that the media can "make" me do anything. I can't blame it for my eating disorder. There is definitely too much emphasis on unattainable perfection, but in my case, I've enabled myself with this behavior for too long.

I'm not sure if that even makes any sense or if I even really answered the question. :-)

I don't think that the media causes eating disorders. It might trigger people who have eating disorders to see 5ft. 10" models who weigh 115 pounds. America's Next Top Model is sometimes a trigger for me. But I have the choice to watch it or not. Sometimes I watch stuff that has to deal with weight because I'm addicted to dieting and I want to see what the models on T.V. do to stay thin. Even though I cannot act out what they do anymore. Seomtimes I on purpose expose myself to triggers. I have no idea why. The media gives us a false image of what is beautiful and acceptable but we have to chose whether to believe it or not. The media is bad anyway you look at it. It makes sinful behavior look like the norm and it is hurting the world that we live in.

You all make very valid points. It is true that there is a certain amount of personal accountability when it comes to something as serious and personal as an eating disorder. And it's true that sometimes the media does give a false sense of perfection but it is ultimately our choice to decide on how much it will effect your life.

Thank you for your input!

I think it's true that fashion, and fitness, magazines add to the ed phenomenon.
