Hello, My 36 yo DD has cancer of the tongue. They Dx in Oct 2005..Squamous Cell carcinoma it took forever to get her insurance Like none so she went to the county as a medical indigent adult. in Jan 2006 Yesterday they told her that they are going to remove the left part of her tongue, give her a tracheostomy, and then remove the lymph nodes from her neck. If they are positive then they will do radiation for 5 days a week for 6 weeks.. all outpatient except for the surgery.. He told her that time would let her talk again. I have been reading some pretty nasty stuff about this cancer and the pain relating to the radiation. Some of it says that her teeth will fall out and she will not be able to make saliva ect...
Has anybody here dealt with this type of cancer and radiation?? Any hints for support and care?? In my family we have had breast cancer (my sister), colon cancer (Older DD),uterine (younger DD) I have had ovarian, thyroid, cervical and uterine cancer. All the others were chemo treatments post surgery not radiation. And yes we had the genetic tests and they came back negative.. Any help would be appreciated Rusty

Thank you all and particularly M26 and Judy.. My daughter has no insurance as her husband divorced her in Sept and the cancer was dx in Oct before she could get work. No he pays nothing for her support and right now she cannot work, She will have surgery on the 6th at the county hospital which is over 100 miles from the house.. It has been a zoo here trying to figure out how to get her back and forth every day next week for all the preop junk.
The reason for her tongue surgery is that seems to be the locus.. She has never smoked, drank to excess or drugged so they don't know why she got it this young..
I wish you all the best Judy as ovarian cancer is NO fun.. M26 it is OK to feel overwhelmed I know I did when I posted here the other day.. The support and prayers of all of you have helped.. We are getting a thunderstorm so I getting off the computer as we are on generator power.I just had to say thanks.... Rusty
