CL of the Month

cl-ivhjude

Judy's been a Community Leader for H&WB throughout all its name changes and moves -- first as a chat host when we had a space on AOL and then making the crossover to the web to host both boards and chats.  Despite doing battle daily with ovarian cancer, Judy's found the time to launch a new board with Poppy that was an immediate hit!  Judy shares her thoughts on being a CL:

Name: cl-ivhjude   ...  Judy   ~~~~  aka or Jude or Hoot :)

Communities: I host 3 boards,  1. Living With Cancer  2. Cancer Friends & Family  3. Finding Your Best Life which I cohost with cl-libelulle

What brought you to Health and Well-Being?  Around 11 years ago I found iVillage on AOL (iVillage no longer has space on AOL) as I was looking for support for health issues.  Immediately, I was impressed with the care, support and professionalism of the site and began attending many of the chats.  A year later I became a CL in the health area and soon Cindi had snagged me to be part of the arthritis team which was an awesome group of CLs, chats, boards and members.  As I recall, the arthritis area had about 1,200 people on the mail list to be notified of the many weekly chats.

How has your experience as a community leader affected your life? One important part of my life is the opportunity to contribute to the lives of others.  Becoming a CL afforded me that opportunity in a medium that could reach a global, cross-section of people.  It was much like the contributions I had always made to those around me but now I was able to do so in a larger arena.  Another perk, and one that I didn't foresee, was the close friendships that have been forged over the years with people from all over the world.  These friends have had a great influence in my life and added richness.  Two years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer, these very people gave me support during my struggle and are still doing so.  I never feel alone in my fight against cancer and that says volumes.

What's your most memorable and/or entertaining experience as a CL?  There have been two that stick out in my mind.  For 2 years I co-hosted a chat for iVillage on AOL called Arthritis ... The Emotional Side.  It was clearly one of my most exciting online times and a very meaningful chat.  The chat room held a maximum of 40 people and there was often a lineup waiting to get into the chat each week as it often maxed out.   The chat had such a positive and vibrant format that you just felt wonderful after being there.  The most recent memorable time happened three weeks ago. cl-libelulle (Poppy) and I launched the message board, Finding Your Best Life and it has a similar format to the chat of a few years ago.  It has taken off beautifully with over 1000 posts in 3 weeks and already has that same feeling of positive energy.

What are some of your offline hobbies and interests? I love animals, my own pets and all the wildlife around me and have a wonderful time with them daily.  From bird watching to chatting with squirrels and communicating with all animals is a special interest of mine.  My entertainment has become limited since cancer, so most of it is now within the confines of my home. I love music and movies and have a library of each.  When I need to focus away from illness I head for the music and movies.  Also, most of my social life now comes to my home so I have visitors frequently and love the interaction, you can never have enough company lol.

Final thoughts? The CL of the Month is an honor and one for which I'm not sure I'm qualified as what I do doesn't seem extraordinary at all.  I receive as much as I give so perhaps I should be honoring our Health & Well-Being area here at iVillage.  My time is precious to me and I don't waste it, which means that the endeavors I am involved in are worthwhile and important to me rather than trivial. My involvement at iVillage is important and worthwhile on many levels and I am appreciative of the opportunity to be part of the CL team.  Thank you iVillage :)
