Hi Everyone!!

Hope you are all doing well. My father is hanging in there. He finished 4 chemos and is resting in his house in Florida. He had 50% shrinkage and still feels discomfort in his liver which he believes is the chemo still working for him! He does have permanent nerve damage in his left foot and finger tips but he says he can live with that. His main concern right now is gaining weight back. He just can not put any weight back on. He was asking me about what kind of protein shakes people are drinking...I remember a common one but I am forgetting the name of it now. Does it start with an E? His nutritionist keeps telling him to stay away from Saturated fats so if it has a lot of Sat. Fat in it ..it probably won't be good for him.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks again and I hope you are all doing well.

Prayers and Positive Thoughts to all!!!!!

You may be thinking of Ensure which is a great protein shake.

Hi Sarah, I'm happy to hear of the shrinkage. Ihope your father's discomfort lets up soon. I know it can take a while for the effects of the treatments to let up -- but, unfortunately, sometimes the nerve damage is permanent with some of the chemos, like numbness or tinglings.

Like Judy said, it may be Ensure you're thinking of. My husband has been drinking Ensure Plus - it has more calories & vitamins, etc. than the regular Ensure, he says the vanilla is the best. But his dr did mention the Carnation breakfast Judy mentioned - he said it would be an appropriate supplement and he thought it was cheaper. I looked up Carnation's nutrition web site and found that they also have all kinds of supplements you can order besides the one you can get at the store -- ones meant for people with special needs.

Also, to add calories, I add ice cream & chocolate, banana, strawberries, even peanut butter or whatever flavor he feels like he wants at the time to make it into a real "shake" to add even more calories. For months he could only take liquids so we had to become quite inventive. Before that he was getting nutrition through a stomach tube & he ended up losing 70 lbs.

There's another one out there called Boost - my husband tried it but liked Ensure better. Your Dad will just probably have to try the different ones to see which ones he likes.

Give your Dad our best. And you take care.

Your 6 month old saying DaDa for the lst time IS very exciting. Thanks for sharing that. I wonder what he'll say next??? They're such little wonders...like little sponges learning so fast.

You take care. Karen
