ovarian cancer scare

My mother died of ovarian cancer five years ago. My sister's gyn insisted she have a hysterectomy (he happened to mom's gyn) and she did. She has nagged me ever since but my gyn didn't push for the surgery and I felt confident everything was going to be ok. Well just a few days after my 54th bd I went for an ultrasound and my gyn called and said there is a spot on my ovary. She said she knows it not a simple cyst filled with fluid but a solid mass. She says everything else is good-no fluid, no other masses in the uterus. There is a slight thickening of the uterine wall but feels that may be menopausal. She originally scheduled me for just an ovary removal by laproscopy but after talking to my sister and cousin who is a nurse I called back and asked them to schedule a complete hysterectomy. My gyn had no problem with that and Tuesday morning I am scheduled for surgery. My sister is unhappy with me because she believes all worry would have been avoided if I just insisted on surgery several years ago. I am confused and terrified at the same time. I am wondering what news awaits for me when I come out of recovery.

Thank you for your kind message. I will respond in a few days and let you know how it all went. I don't think I will be home from the hospital until at least Thursday. We are all trying to stay postive and only think good thoughts. My hair has gotten long and unruly and I wanted to shorten it before tomorrow so my sis came and cut it for me tonight. It was good for us to focus on something else for awhile. And we did manage a few silly laughs. Thanks again, now I need to head for bed as I will be up at 4 so I can be at the hospital by 6.

Thank you for your kind messages. I am finally feeling well enough to check email and respond. The news was good. I almost can't believe it as we lost a community member to cancer just two nights ago. A young woman of 56. It really was sad. Back to my news. There was a fibroid tumor in my uterus which was blocking the ovary giving it a wierd appearance. I am not sorry I had this surgery however, now I will never have to face this kind of worry again. I would like to see the powers that be work as hard at finding a cure to ovarian cancer as they have breast cancer. I am glad for breast cancer patients but now let's turn our attention to ovarian cancer. My situation does show that you have to believe the best and be optimistic. I know my mom was with me through all of this and she always said If you think you have it bad look around someone has it worse. I certainly felt that the other night when we received news of yet another young victim of cancer. Again I thank you for your kindness.
