My father has been told he has lung cancer. He has fought skin cancer ( non melenoma) since '94 and the doctor says it was caused due to this. They found a second cancer after a biopsy while he was being treated for the skin cancer and decided to look for further cancer in his body. They found a tumor during a cat scan in one lung. He is 62 and a great man. I cried all night. I am trying to remain positive and didn`t cry when he told me because I wanted to remain strong so he would be too. I told him a lady I care for survived lung cancer after having part of her lung removed. I am a home support worker. He is scheduled for the same thing this month. It is one thing when I deal with other people`s parents being sick and I can be so supportive but it is another story when the patient is now MY parent. I am so scared of what he may go through and so scared he will die. Cancer is never fair!!

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOO much Philly for the kind words and encouragement!! I am trying to remain positive and have been so strong when talking to him while inside my heart is breaking. You give me encouragement and YES.. 62 is NOT old. and it is definately too young to stop living!! I am just so scared.. we are still finding out where things are at this time and the only way we will know is through the surgery. I live 5 hours away from him and that really bothers me. I am going down to visit after he is home from hospital. I want to be some support to him and his wife ( my step Mom).I have worked with clients who have had lung cancer and the knowledge of what they went through scares me to think my father may go through that. Now blessed it be.. my father only has it in one lung and the lady I cared for has it in both lungs and due to her age 82, she decided to not take treatment.( she has passed away since ) I am concerned for the costs ( he isn`t under a plan) and for the prossess he may have to go through. I have told him to NOT think anything but positive !! He`s a redhead like me and I know how fiesty redheads can be..haha!! I will keep in touch as I know I am going to need this board.. thank you in advance for everyone`s help and encouragement!!

Since you are 5 hours away, try to send him hand written notes of encouragement.

Hope everyone has a great Summer!

I thank you Philymawmaw for the great idea. I bought a bunch of blank cards and didn`t know why I would need them .. Now I know... sending him a card every day is a great way to help him when I can`t be there. Your DD is very fortunate to have you .. walking in someone elses shoes is the best understanding of anyone`s pain. My prayers are with you both!!

Oh my gosh- SAME with my father. Although, he was a smoker and has emphysemia. A routine chest x-ray detected the cancer. He's also 62 (will be 63 this month). He had his upper right lobe removed on March 27 and has healed very well. He's now doing 4 rounds of chemo. So far he's done one and had no side effects, other than being tired. I'll take that.
Good luck with your Dad. I know it's devistating at the thought of not having him. I found out about my Dad's diagnosis just 3 weeks after my daughter was born.

Please keep us posted and I'll send you P's & PT's.
Thanks,
Karen

my father is also 62 and was also just diagnosed in early June w/ lung cancer. Unfortunately, it is stage four and out in his blood stream. He has several large tumors in his brain as well as his lymphnodes. We are still reeling from this due to how fast he has gone downhill. Just in May he was working full time with only barely noticible odd symptoms that had nothing at all to do with breathing etc. Now we are in Hospice and just got a hospital bed for him.
