He finally saw the surgeon this morning. The surgeon, unlike the oncologist, is not willing to give him time to wait beyond a 6 month window. He says that because dh's prostate is so enlarged and asymmetrical, he's concerned about it growing even though dh is in the lowest risk group for that happening. Because his prostate is so enlarged, it is much more likely that the biopsy, having only taken 8 cores, missed something, so... Surgery will be in January. Just waiting for the exact date.
Other news was good. They have a new system that allows them to test to see that the nerves are working well before they close him up. The incision is abdominal rather than in the perineum. He will only be in hospital for two days rather than the 4-5 we were told before. (I did ask if this was necessary. If they would please keep him the extra days since he will be cranky. LOL) The pain is expected to be controlled with OTC meds since it's considered minimal. Urine leakage is 0 in 90% of patients, occasional leakage in 9%, and a problem for 1%. If he's in the 10%, they can go back in and fix it now. There are more things to help with ED issues than ever, more than we were aware of. This is all great news!
Lastly, they asked him if he wanted to donate his prostate to the university for research purposes after it's tested at the lab. He signed his consent for that. As he says, what in the world would he be doing with it anyway? LOL
