My FIL was diagnosed last week with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. He went to the hospital with back pain, chest pain, and couldn't talk and was placed in ICU. It turned out that he had a blood clot in his throat (which is why he couldn't talk), pneumonia, and when they finally were able to run additional tests the renal cell carcinoma was discovered. He had his bladder removed last year due to bladder cancer and was told that the cancer had not spread. We don't know if he had the renal cell carcinoma first or as a result of the spread of the cancer in his bladder but since renal cell carcinoma is extremely difficult to detect we think it was probably there first or at least concurrently.
He's home now, under hospice care. We don't know how long he's got, 3 months? 6? a year? The doctors weren't very clear on that. We decided to go ahead with hospice care though since his wife, DH's step-mom, is not in the best of health herself and can't care for him on her own and all of the kids work and can't be there all the time.
I'm sure I'll be checking in and about as time goes on, so I wanted to be sure that I made the time now to introduce myself.

Amy- sending you gentle hugs for you and your family.
This is all so new to me; therefore, I am still learning about all the different cancers.
I will keep you and all of your family in my prayers too.
