hi everyone, my fiance's mom was just diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I've researching it on the internet, but of course do not get teh full grasp of it all. I hope someone can give me an idea on what to expect as far as the process, the time line (which i know varies from person to person), the treatments, what she may go through, how you may have coped, etc. Anything at this point would help. I appreciate your time. Support from family and friends is great, but as you know there is nothing like comfort from someone that has been through the same situation. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the board.
I am hoping someone drops in that knows more about multiple myeloma.
"Stem Cells Cancer & Me" Author John E. McNamara Publisher AuthorHouse is a book recently published that takes a person through the finding of MM, the ups and downs and finally recovery and remission for six years and still going strong. Can be purchased anywhere on line, publisher a nd book stores. The fight is for life.
While I haven't been through this personally, a very good friend has.
My father was diagnosed with MM two years ago.
hi, thank you so much for replying. i appreciate the info.
I can only speak about my friend - I'm sure each doctor has their own protocol.
Hi michy16,
I just saw your note by accident, or should I say, synchronicity. My Dad got multiple myeloma several years ago and we looked up the best doc in Pittsburgh (Dr. Agha - UPMC) and we researched and figured out that treating MM with Thalidomide intake first, raises your chances of a succesful stem cell transplant. Thalidomide is covered by insurance but is damn expensive if you are on Medicare and get in the donut hole - why? because the greedy CEO of Celgene Corp. keeps raising the price of the meds ever since he found out it really works on MM.
The darn stuff was shelved every since the 60's when it created flipper babies when exposed to pregnant women and they were providing it to leprosy patients in other countries for pennies before this jackass realized he
hello,
thanks for the info,
Hello, my Aunt passed from Multiple Myeloma in 2000. She was diagnosed in 1995 and was told she had an approximately 5 year expectancy rate. She had the whole nine yards Chemo, Radiation and eventually a year or two before she passed she had a Blood Transfusion which obviously was not successful. She suffered terribly at the end with bone pain. Best advice I can give you is if a Doctor's treatment sounds iffy to you then it is.. Find someone else! They make mistakes.. Good Luck!!
