Hi,
I just saw that there was a discussion group on cancer for friends and family. What a great support. I am sorry you are all here but I am sure you have gained a lot of insight and strength from each other which is good!
Some brief history...my father-in-law who is 61, had a routine colonoscopy in June of 2007. He was diagnosed with stage 3 metastatic colon cancer which spread to his liver. He has numerous spots on his liver so surgery was not an option. He was started on two week infusions of Avastin and Oxaliplatin. He was given Xeloda pills 14 days on and 14 days off. After 4 months, he started to have reactions to the Oxaliplatin and was switched to CPT 11 and the other medications remained the same. He had a CT scan in October which showed a 25% reduction in the spots on the liver. Great!! We were so excited. After four months, he had another CT scan and we got the results yesterday. They were not so good. It showed that the spots on the liver had gotten larger and his CEA went from 2 to 7. His oncologist said that he was not responding well to the Xeloda and they were going to switch from Xeloda to 5-FU to be given via pump into his port cath for 48 hours after his infusion. Has anyone heard of this method before? Does anyone know what type of side effects the 5-FU will bring?
I just want to know as much as I can so I can be strong for them and give them some knowledge.
Thanks for listening and I wish you all the best!
Lisa

Hello, I am sorry to hear about your father in law. My dad was just diagnoised with stage 3 colorectal cancer two months ago. He started radiation two weeks ago and tomorrow will be his second chemo treatment. I am just learing more and more about colon cancer as the days go by, but I wanted to share some information with you that my family and I have learned. I dont know how much you and your family beleive in natural remedies, but a co-worker of my passed me a news article that he found in the OC register about a man that took Marie Phytoplankton and it cured his colon cancer after two weeks. I am not much of a believer, but where do you draw the line when someone you love has cancer? So we found it online and my dad has been taking it twice a day for a week now. It seemed to help his energy level, so we will see how it works. It just gave him some postive hope, and if it helps him feel better, then great. We arent exactly expecting it to cure him, but what if?? Once I read about it there are so many things it helps with especially regenerating the cells in the body and repairing the liver is one as well. My aunt found an article about a woman that had 9 tumors and after 1 month she only had 8 left. Doctors dismiss the notion that Marie Phytoplankton can cure anything.
Just had to share that with you, maybe after some research you might have your family member try it too. I have attached some information if you are curious to see.
Wish you and your family all the strength and love to get through your father in laws illness.
