Hi I just found out that a little girl in my daughter's pre-k has leukemia and I was looking for suggestions on what to give.  I know that they already have food for a month so I was thinking a gift basket of toys?  I'm not really sure what to do so I am here asking you for your opinions.  I want to send something or do something and would love to hear your ideas.  Thank you in advance and she is only 4 so I wasn't sure if hospitals are strict on certain things thank you.

I know cancer effects everyone differently but I know initially my brother (20 years old) was very tired, sore and grumpy when he first started treatment (he has lymphoma though..not leukemia) . This meant NOTHING could hold his attention very long or he tired out too easily trying to do things to keep him busy. Some of the best things that he received were...

-posters and drawings for his hospital room. Of course it all depends on how long this little girl is in the hospital but most hospital rooms are REALLY boring.

-my little cousin bought him a whole box of dollar store things. (think stickers, play dough, silly action figures etc) It sounds ridiculous but it worked because nothing required much concentration.

-our neighbors pooled their money and bought my brother an ipod. i'm not saying you alone should buy something like this but if the pre-k class wanted to buy something together it might be an idea?..I know it seems like a ridiculous present for a 4 year old but this is why I suggest it for anyone... at times my brother has a private room, other times he shares a room with 1 or 2 others. At times the sounds in a hospital are not so pleasant and even just the general hum and beeping of machines can wear you out. My brother finds the ipod is good to block these things out.

-another suggestion is a gift card to a movie rental place. Movies are another activity that requires little effort from the patient and my brother finds the hospital supply is limited so he likes sending my mom out to get him a "good" movie. likewise gift cards for gas stations are great as well depending on how far the family has to travel (my parents drive over 2 hours to get to the hospital and make the drive almost every day..needless to say the gas bills add up!)

Hope this has helped a little...

Best of luck.
