Lump question

Hello! I'm new to the board, but I've been on IV for years. I usually hang out on my December EC.
Anyway. We got news yesterday that my MIL has a "sizeable lump" in her left breast. She went to the doctor yesterday after bleeding from one of her nipples for about three weeks.
I did a little bit of clicking around and it seems these are really bad signs. My question is: is there any hope it's not cancer?
She has a mamogram Monday & an appt with a surgeon later next week.
I'm just trying to get as much information as I can at this point to try and figure out what lies ahead.
Thanks.
Jenna

Hi, Jenna, I am co-cl with Maggie on the Breast Cancer Support Board. Just stopped by to see if someone needed something while she is on vacation.
Is there any
Come visit the Minnesota board where
Lauri is right; most lumps turn out to be benign. That said, some don't. I don't want to alarm you, but my story did go to a diagnosis. I didn't feel a lump, nor did my doctor detect one, but at my mammogram this spring, I had blood shoot from the nipple. I called the doctor and she said it could be from trauma to the breast, but that it was also a sign of certain cancers and that I was sure to need further testing. She set that up, and it revealed the lowest level of breast cancer, non-invasive ductile carcinoma. The good news about that is that it is very very curable. What I didn't know going in was that there were different types of breast cancer and which kind makes a big difference. Some require extensive efforts to fight them; others need much less treatment. Or--it could be something else entirely. I'm no expert and only know my experience.
The thing is to not worry about anything until you get a diagnosis, and if it is cancer, know that it is not the end of the world. The doctors, treatments and drugs are amazing.
I'll be pulling for you MIL. Post and let us know what the results are.
