I was 24 years old and my husband was 25 - we already had a healthy 9 month old son when we became pregnant again. We were so excited and couldn't wait for the ultrasound. I had declined the Maternal Serum screening as I was not in any high risk group.
We had the 20 week ultrasound and everything seemed fine. However, a couple days later I received a call from my Doctor saying that they found an Echogenic Foci or EIF on the baby's heart which was a soft marker for DS. We decided then to do the blood work, which came back at 1/15 for DS.
Based on the blood work and EIF we decided to have the Amino. The FISH results came back within three days with a positive for DS. We were devastated at first, but I am very grateful we had time to prepare ourselves and our family for Eric's birth.
By the time Eric was born we knew everything we could about DS and what therapies to get him started in etc. We also expected all of the numerous medical tests they put him through and we were not stressed out at all.
Oh no! I am so sorry it was such a tramatic time for you. I am so glad to hear she is doing well today.
My son does have a heart defect, but it's very mild. He has a Coarctation of Aorta or CoA - but it does not seem to be affecting him *too* much right now. He sees the Caridologist on December 12th again for another echocardiogram. Surgery is on a "wait and see" basis. I really am praying he does not have to have it!
The only thing I had done was the level II ultra sound. She had NO markers at all. I was 36 when I had Mayson but i opted out of the rest of the testing. It wouldnt of made a difference anyway!

I didn't do the blood test or an amnio.

Just found out on Friday that Vi has some defects as well...
1. Small inlet ventricular septal defect
2. Probable cleft metral valve with trivial mitral regurgitation
3. Small-moderate secundum atrial spetal defect and patent foramen ovale
Well here's my story.
