We shop at 3 different Wal Marts.

That is a common practice and the same for grocery stores. I have friend who worked in the grocery store industry and he said that the prices for identical items will vary according to location. Generally prices will be higher in more affluent areas.

Competition also can make a difference. in areas where there is no competition prices will be higher, in areas with lot of competition prices are lower. In a small town with only one grocery store prices will be higher than in the same size town that has 2 or 3 stores competing for business.

I think price has to do with location.

I shop at two different WM's, both of them "super", one where I live (rural) and one where I work (larger community), about 30 miles difference between the actual stores.

Another thing to factor in is the overhead costs of the "nicer, newer" stores.

Yes, I have noticed this for years.

I would disagree, though, with the "new/old buildings, overhead being more, etc" theory...we live in a Chicago burb and have a rather crappy old WM nearby.

I don't know about walmarts but I have noticed with Target that the price is different between a regular target store, a super target & the target "greatland" store we have (which has more groceries than a regular target but isn't as big as a super target).

So far as I can tell for the target stores around here price is more reflective of the type of target store vs. the area it is in or how new it is.

I've actually experienced the opposite -- lower prices in nicer neighborhoods and higher prices in not as nice neighborhoods.
