I was watching Dave ramsey on HULU the other day and he told a listener that her husband was being stupid to expect her to spend $30/wk to feed the 2 of them.

I think it really depends on the conditions you are shopping under. The first is where you are geographically. I know that I spend about 25% more living in Alaska than I did living in Texas. It is also MUCH cheaper to feed 5 people (when you look at the cost per person) than it is to feed only two. And, you have to look at the diet that you are trying to provide. When dh and myself became really serious about eating more veggies and only eating lean proteins and whole grains, our grocery bill jumped by about 33%. In my household, I spend about $400 every two weeks and I feed 3 adults, one 14 year old and one 12 year old (plus a small cat and small dog). So, for my family, it would be about $40 a week per person.

Let's see, I spend $90/wk. on groceries and there are 2 adults and 2 kids so I guess that's about $22.50 per person, per week.

Those are very valid points that neither he or I had considered.

my typical budget is around $400 a month for a family of 6.

this is just food, not paper or pet stuff.

we have the kids about 2/3 of the time

so that makes our average $22 per person a week.

The kids eat lunches at school.

I spend $600 a month in S. California for three people. That amount also buys pet food and cleaning supplies too.

If I eliminated everything other than food and beverages, then the total would be approx $35 per person per week.
