Traking Spending?

Does anyone have a good format for tracking their spending? I want to track EVERYTHING. I want to know where every dollar goes. I know a lot of our money 'disappears' - meaning I don't know what happened to it but we spent it on something. I really think if we start to track our money, we can cut down. I'm working on creating an Excel spreadsheet but can't figure out a good way to do it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I use mint.com and sometimes Quicken but I have to admit I don't track everything (like cash!)

I keep a shoebox on my counter for all reciepts and I keep a small notebook in

We use our online banking through our bank. If we have cash it's because we got it out of the atm and that shows up and I can kind of look at the day and remember why we got the cash. We try really hard to not use cash though because it's harder to keep track of and easier to spend.

Are you trying to establish a budget or stick to one?

I guess I'm more trying to establish one. I have a simple one for regular bills and leave $150/wk for grocery, household, gas, and pretty much everything else. But that was basically an amount I pulled out of thin air so I need to design a better budget but first need to determine where my money goes.

Thanks for the tip though - when I get to that point, I might try it!

If I remember I'll start throwing grocery store reciepts in a box.
