In my state, the first week of unemployment is held and not paid. It is considered a waiting period.

I know that in several of the states I've lived in that you wouldn't get paid unemployment for the case you are describing.

I thought that was only for salaried workers.

They may have told you qualified based on the information you told them - but when they got your claim and investigated it, they realized that you don't qualify. It happens A LOT. Until they review your entire case, they can not promise that you will qualify for benefits. When my husband first applied they told him "It looks as though you will qualify. However, the final decision will be based on a review of the entire case" (which included -- verifying that he had made enough money, that the company had laid him off without the offer of another position, why he was laid off and if work would resume in a timely manner or not). I really think every single case is very different and perhaps the workers shouldn't have said "You'll qualify" -- they should have said "Based on the information you've given us....".
