How long do I pay for screwing up?

Well, just as I was getting things under control, the holidays and PMS hit at the same time. I've caught myself mindlessly eating BAD stuff (chocolate and cookies) in the evenings - sometimes when the PMS hits, the chocolate cravings are impossible! So for about a week, even though I'm eating well during the day, the evenings have been bad, and the BG numbers have been HIGH.

I just re-started the South Beach diet this morning. Did all the menu planning, grocery shopping and some meal prep last night. So far today, I've had 10 grams of carbs, yet my BG was 278 2 hours after breakfast. Could that be a residual from last night?

If you make a dietary blunder, how long do the sugars tend to stay elevated? I'm drinking tons of water, trying to flush my system.

BTW - I'll soon have a solution to the evening eating issue - I'm moving my horse to a new barn with an indoor arena, so I can start riding after work again. I won't be home with food close at hand. Of course, the junk food being in the house is a huge issue. My sister (who is diabetic, but under control) buys all this junk food. When I've asked her to either hide it from me, or not buy it at all, she gets whiney. Yes, I should be responsible for what goes into my mouth, but noone in our home needs this stuff - she needs to lose about 200 lbs and my mom could lose 50. She's very passive-aggressive, and I wonder if she insists on bringing junk into the house just to sabotage me. OK - enough of THAT rant - LOL - I didn't start this post to #itch about family dynamics! But if feels good to vent nonetheless! ;-)

Hugs to all!

Diane

Diane;

Your sister is diabetic, needs to lose 200 pounds and has her diabetes under control! I don't think so. She is a disaster waiting to happen. Did you mean 20 pounds? Anyway she shouldn't be bring junk food into the house for herself and tempting you.

Your hormones are probably what is holding your blood sugar up. The more interesting testing in this instance would be what was your bedtime blood sugar and your fasting morning blood sugar.

I don't know what to suggest about your chocolate craving although I did try a new product this week which is chocolate syrup with no sugar and no carbo because it was sweetened with splenda. I put some in my diabetic hot chocolate and thought it tasted pretty good. I will need to try it on vanilla ice cream to be sure. I can't eat the diabetic candy which is sweetened with sorbitol because it gives me stomach cramps and diarrhea. Now that isn't fair!

Anyway I hope you feel better real soon and do enjoy your horse. The horse probably enjoys the extra attention also.

Happy New Year,

Mary Frances

Is there any reason that I can't take regular unsweetened baking chocolate, melt it down and add splenda, and let it harden in candy molds? Do you think the taste would be close to regular chocolate. Baking chocolate has always seemed pretty hard, so do you think adding the splenda would affect this? Just an idea. I have the chocolate cravings and also the problem with sorbitol & mallitol.

Thanks Mary Frances - I forgot about hormones being a factor (even though there was a very recent thread on that!). It was so frustrating, because I'd finally had 2 weeks in a row where all but one or two of my numbers was within range. BIG progress!

RE: my sister, yes, I meant that she needs to lose 200 lbs, not 20. I guess when I said that her diabetes is under control, I meant that her BG numbers are always within range. Guess that's not really the same thing, is it? She's an RN - she knows the risks of not eating right and not exercising (diabetic or not).

But I'm hoping to move beyond temptation, anyway. I'm back on the South Beach diet - it seems to be the right food plan for me. When I get a sweet tooth, I just envision myself wearing my reward when I get to my goal weight - a new sidesaddle habit. Tall slender ladies look so lovely riding aside - and I've got the tall part covered already LOL.

Happy New Year!

Hugs,

Diane

I found it in the special food section of my local grocery store. I also found sugar wafers made with splenda. My sister served it with some diet ice cream and two cookies and it looked like we had a sundae.

There wasn't a lot of it but they had several bottles. We only have two grocery stores in the town I live in but they aren't that large as live in a small town. So look in that department and if it isn't there, then ask the manager if they can get it for you. I wish you success. I wasn't too successful in getting them to carry sugar free lemon jello. I have a wonderful dessert recipe I am going to post that uses the sugar free lemon jello. I had to make it with lime since I couldn't get lemon. Now my sister has found some lemon for me and I am going to try it again.

Hope this is helpful. Please have a Happy New year,

Mary Frances

Rachael,

I don't see why you couldn't do that. You are supposed to be able to use Splenda measure for measure as you would use sugar. Sometimes I find Splenda to be too sweet for me but with baking chocolate you probably wouldn't need to decrease the amount.

Infact my sister wasn't sure I was going to be able to find the chocolate syrup and she made some exactly like you suggested. It was a little more chocolately than what I bought.

So try it and let us know how it worked. :-)

Happy New Year,

Diane,

Laughing she said, nurses are so busy taking care of everybody else that they often do a lousy job of taking care of themselves. Nurse has clay feet just like everybody else. I have the worst time following thorough on activities that would benefit me. Let anything else come up and I will do that first. Psychologically nurses need to be needed. This is why you find nurses in a lot of abusive relationships, often over weight and often drinking and smoking too much.

Anyway lets concentrate on you! Try to Southbeach diet and see if you can start losing weight. These diets are not good for the long term and aren't a susbstitute for meal planning done with a dietitian who specializes in diabetes. Do measure your blood sugar and make sure that it stays in the range your doctor has set for you.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Happy New Year,

Mary Frances

Donna,

I LOVE your signature! Yes, I can have the no added sugar one but it does have 50 calories to it. I added some of the no sugar chocolate sauce to it and it certainly improved the taste! Today my husband got me some low carb ice cream from Bryers that has only 4 grams of carbs. I don't know what it is made of other than Splenda and it tasted pretty nice. I don't know how readily available it is yet in the market.

In college I drank coffee black, now I have to have cream and sugar! Go figure! Actually I drink milk and non-sugar sweetner in it.

Welcome to the board and I hope you will join our conversation.

Happy New Year,

Mary Frances
