A Question For Gestational/Type 2 Diabet

Hi All: Sorry if the spelling is incorrect.
I have a friend "Sue" who says was a size 9 when she got married.(I'm guessing that is about 130 lbs.). She had her 1st son who was fine. Sue gained some lbs. which many women can't lose. Ten months later she had her 2nd son. With this one the Doc's discovered she had Gestational Diabetes, told her to eat little sugar, carbs, exercise, etc. They checked her sugars often and found them higher than they liked. She had her boy and they told her not to have anymore children or she would become a Type 2 Diabetic within 10 years. Of course, she wanted a girl(can't imagine my life without one), she however gained alot of weight, didn't go back for follow-up testing, had trouble conceiving(I think cause she had gained so much weight, she then weighed 250 lbs.) Six years later, she finally got her baby girl. We were thrilled needless to say!! But at 3 mths. pregnant, she was put on Insulin and testing 4 times a day because her sugar levels were so high. I felt so sorry for her(You don't know how much she fears needles). Three years later the Doc tells her she's a Type 2 Diabetic. She had to be on a strick Diet, take pills for Diabetes(Don't ask me what) and test her sugar often, and exercise. I went with her to weight watchers, she was doing great, lost 35lbs. She moved from our province, Ontario over to another Canadian province of Quebec(just across the river from us). She got a new Doc on that side(just a family Doc), is now 3 years later, she says she has totally cut out sweets, now weights 278 lbs., I know she doesn't exercise cause she says she's too tired, now wears glasses, which she didn't before(okay could be old age). I asked her how often she tests her bs's and asked what her last a1c test was. She says she tests once a week like her Doc told her to and her blood sugars are usually 5.8(which in our measurement 5.7-7.5 is good). I told her that she should test herself at least twice a day. I'm very sorry for making this so long but I tend to be detailed. But please any people with type 2 Diabetes(maybe preferrably Gestational onset). I don't know all about type 2 or Gestational. All I know is my Hubby's aunt died from Gestational and my aunt died from Type 2 because she thought Diabetes was a minor thing, didn't lose weight, loved her donuts and had seven strokes, leg amputated, couldn't talk or eat, was bed-ridden and died last Christmas time. It scares me, Sue is only 40. Is she right and I'm crazy???????? I need to know. Thanks much in advance!!!!!!!!!

Hi I had gestational diabetes with all four of my children. My baby being almost 11 years old now. Will be 11 is 8 days. I found out 2 days before Christmas that I was diabetic. Now with that said, I am not sure how the doctors in Canada work but my own family doctor has told me to test at least 3 times a day.
I am taking pills only for my diabetes and learning to deal with this myself instead of having to deal with it on my dh's only. While he is on both pills and insulin his numbers a1c were
