treating a high

Dh tested before supper. His sugar was high. 19.4 or in US 349. That's really high for him. It's usually about 5 or 6 before a meal. Any suggestions on lowering it? We know how to treat a low but not a high.

There are a couple of things you can do to treat a high. YOu didn't mention if your husband is on insulin, if so he needs to take some to bring his bs down. There is a correction factor that is right for you, it's how 1 unit of insulin will bring your blood sugar down a given amount of points (for instance, mine is 1 unit will bring my blood sugar down 50 points). I would also test for ketones, if there is a moderate amount to large, then you woould need to contact the doctor as it can be dangerous for your husband to be in ketoacidosis. If there weren't any ketones, I probably would just take the insulin and try to exercise at a not too intense level to bring it down. If he's on meds. I would try to do some light exercise as well. Also, it might help to drink some non-carb liquids such as water, diet colas, etc. to flush out his system. Maybe eat some protein too.
I would suggest to you talking to his doctor about this any other issues/questions you might have. It's always good to have a plan when these things happen.
Hope this helps,
Andrea
