As promised - Awareness Ribbon Campaign

Last summer, someone asked here on the board if anyone knew of an awareness ribbon for diabetes. After some digging, another poster found information that a small group of people, largely parents of diabetic kids If I remember correctly, had started a groundroots effort with an awareness ribbon…of gray. Gray to signal the dark clouds of diagnosis, and view of the future because there is no cure. Myself and a couple other members were really upset by this. I refuse to take this lying down, and I am going to continue living my life. And I, for one, am not going to wear a gray ribbon. Personally, the day I was diagnosed, that was the day I think my life actually began. I suggested bright Kelly green, bright orange, turquoise, teal, a happy color because to me, bringing notice to this disease and showing that life does not end at diagnosis are a far better message.

In an effort to help try and get this off the ground, I was going to be sending a letter to various sports and entertainment personalities (who are diabetic themselves, both type 1 and 2) to try and get their help in bringing this to both the JDRF and the ADA and maybe we can get a nationally sanctioned and recognized awareness ribbon out there.
Any feedback or ideas, just post ‘em! Also, if you would like to participate or know of important people in your area that you would like to send this to, you can use the final draft of the letter, and just take my name and type off.

My name is Gabrielle Williams and I am writing to you looking for some assistance. Last summer, several women and I that belong to an online support group for diabetes started looking for information on an awareness ribbon. We were pleased to find that there was one, but that was where our joy ended. Much to our dismay, we found that not only was it not a nationally recognized symbol, but the color was gray to show the “dark clouds of diagnosis†and the dim view of the future with this disease. Needless to say, that is not how any of us saw this. We started talking about this more, and we decided to try and do something about this. It is here that I am now asking for your help.
We would like to propose to both the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Diabetes Association the idea of a national awareness ribbon campaign and would like to propose some of the following colors as ideas for the ribbon color:
Kelly Green
Orange
Turquoise
Teal
All of these are upbeat colors and can signify that life does not end at diagnosis and that you can live a full life with diabetes.
I would like to ask you to please write to the JDRF and the ADA, asking them to consider this idea.
Thank you for your time,
Gabrielle Williams
