I’m sorry if any one take offense from me but this is a serious email that my husband is very embarrassed about. He was listening to the radio and heard that diabetic can give a diabetic impotence , is this true. For the last year he has been having problems and has been very frustrated about this, he wants to go to the doctor but is embarrassed, I was thinking about calling the doctor for him. We have been to the same doctor for 8 years so we have a great doctor patient’s relationship’s there a medication out there to help him.Once again sorry if asking this upsets anyone

Hi and welcome to the board. Yes, it is true that diabetes can cause impotence in males and there is some medications out there to help in that area such as Viagra granted some medications may not work for your husband, but there is a few out there that he may be able to try. Is he in good control? I ask since if he isn't that it may be the cause for his problem, but of course I am no medical proffesional here and just giving you what I know about it. I really do hope that you both find a solution to the impotence, because I know it can be so frustrating for you both not to mention really cause some problems in a marriage. So do get him into see his doctor to discuss this problem right away so that he can get to feeling better and you as well. Do let us know what you both find out as it may just help somebody else who has the same problem. Take care and let us know when you get the chance to. Have a great day!

Julie,

Diabetes also causes lack of sexual interest in women but there is much less research in this for women. Viagra was developed exactly for this reason. There are now newer meds on the market. The nerves which carry the impulses for erection are easily damaged by elevated blood sugars. Unfortunately this is what will bring a person into the doctor's and then the diagnosis of diabetes is made. It is also pretty frustrating for both partners. So I suggest that you call your doctor and talk with him about this.

A gentle hug,

Mary Frances
