Question on neuropathy...

What is your experience with neuropathy of the legs? At what point did you begin to notice decreased sensation - beginning of your diabetic diagnosis or long after?

It has been a long time since I was first diagnosed with neuropathy. How ever I was diagnosed as diabetic at the age of 6 and started to notice that I was unable to feel things so well through my legs and feet at around the age of 13. My mother thinks I had problems prior to that though at like age 10 and she may be right, but that is what I remember. How ever I also was not in good control what so ever due to my parents not wanting to learn anything about diabetes like taking the classes they had me take all by myself as a child. Now that I have better control I have gained some feeling back, but not all of it since it will not all just come back. It is something that I have learned to deal with and to just keep my diabetes under the best control I can so that way I have no more damage to my body from not being in control. So it is possible to get back some feeling in the areas that have neuropathy, but you have to get your diabetes in good control to have that happen. I do hope this helps you out though. Why are you asking about neuropathy? Take care and have a wonderful weekend!
I haven't developed neuropathy yet. Thank Goodness. But as a nurse I have seen patients both ways. Some people would come in complaining of pain and be diagnosed diabetic and others would come in on oral meds to the max with diabetic neuropathy and tell me they were borderline diabetic. This used to irritate no end. I think there is less of telling patients that they are borderline diabetic, or at least I hope so.
Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy? There are several members of this board who have this frustrating and painful condition. I hope you are not one of them.

Hi Isenko:
Welcome to the board! Alot of Great people here with much Good Information!!
I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes(Type 1) in Dec. '61, I was just slightly over 3 years old. I noticed in 1997 the hair on the left and right extremes of my legs was not growing. Cool less to shave. Then in 1998, we moved to our new house I noticed walking down the stairs one day it felt like I was walking on a Big water blister under my middle left toe. I felt under my toe, felt no blister but I noticed a numbness. I
was at my Doc's 1 year before, he did the test on my feet and was amazed that I could still feel all the normal sensations after all those years. I went back, he said I had nerve damage. Which in other words is Neuropathy. I can't seem to find the definition of that word anywhere. But I believe that is the term he used. I can still definitely feel any pain applied to my legs, and I can still feel my middle toe, just a slight numbness. But I don't feel any pain in my legs, except one area which I really want to ask Mary Frances about. I'm soooooooo glad she's back!!!!!!!!
Take Care Sweetheart!..............***Carlie*** :)
