Not Diabetic, but Hypoglycemic...
| Thu, 02-05-2004 - 10:59pm |
hi. i wasn't able to find a board for me, but thought i could get some answers here... is it possible to be BOTH hypo & hyperglycemic? i've been known to have symptoms of both.
thanks,
thanks,

Welcome to the board...I too am hypoglycemic and found this board to be very helpful and supportive. OUr blood sugar issues often overlap so the advice here is beneficial. I do have some wild swings in my sugar and have seen an endocrinologist for it. Have you seen and endocrinologist? While not all hypoglycemics take medication, there is glucophage that has helped me immensely over the last 4 months. I hope to eventually control it with diet and exercise alone but my endo wanted me to stop the high and low readings and become a bit more stable. I try to watch what I eat and have been given the low carb high protein diet from a dietician to follow. It is basically the diabetic diet which includes the exchanges etc. Having hypoglycemia is no picnic as you probably know - just know you have company here and hopefully we can answer your questions and offer support!
Take Care!!

Hi Kristie,
Welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking emdical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.
There isn't a specific board for hypoglycemics here at iVillagehealth anymore so please make yourself welcome here. We diabetics have hypoglycemic reations but heopefully our blood sugars don't fluxuate as much as your's. Many (40%) folks with hypoglycemia go one to be diagnosed as diabetic. But hopefully with controlling it you can prevent or at least delay that diagnosis.
My most important piece of advise fro you is to see a dietitian for meal planning help as this is vitally important for you. Then get your weight as close to normal as possible and develop an exercise program. You need to exercise 30-45 minutes 3-4 times per week as a minimum.
So please pull up a chair and join our coversation. We are here to help as much as we can. We celebrate successes, lament failures and give gentle shoves when necessary.

Thank you so much!!!! Gonna go buy me some sugar free pies and eat them in front of him! NA NA And dare one of the kids (or animals) to get it.
Yea I said animals. I bought a apple pie that was sugar free. I got one bite out of it and I turned away well it was on the table and before Iknew it my Dog reached up and took the whole pan and went to the bathroom to eat it. By the time I figured out it was missing he had ate the whole thing!!!!!!!! Ohhhh man I was upset. lol
Thought I would share that story with you! lol
Lilly;
That made me laugh.
I made a pumkin pie one time in my prediabetic days and I left it on the kitchen counter. When I came home from work there was a neat hole in the center of the custard. Turns out that my then cat liked to eat pumpkin pies!
By the way becareful with the sugar free pie because it still has a lot of carbs in it even though it doesn't have sugar. The crusts are carbohydrate rich. So just exchange them for any breads or other starches you were going to ahve with your meal.

UGHHHH forgot about that. so far I have been good. not really watching my carbs that much. I test daily and they are in normal range. I don't have any sugar that I know of. (had an accident with tea a while back) so If BF can eat a chocalte cake that I made with pudding in the middle I think I am gonna splurge and have that pie I been craving.
Lilly,
In some way I don't think it will ever stop. What I find is when I am not eating my fruits the way I should that my sweet tooth becomes uncontrollable. It isn't fair! I have so many food allergies and the only thing I am not allergic to is desserts! Sometimes I do prepare things with Splenda but I know to watch the total carbs. Lately the sugar alcohols have been bothering my stomach and so I have had to stop eating thigns prepared with those. This is a real bummer because most of the sugar free candy has sugar alcohols in them.
Good luck and do remember that we do have to live and so some time a smiggen of something must be eaten by us. Cake without frosting is just a bread exchange.
