foot care question

I noticed a small bruise under the nail of my pinky-toe the other day. I remember from my diabetes ed classes last year that I'm supposed to keep an eye on any foot injuries, but don't remember what I should be watching for, other that slow healing. How long does such a bruise take to heal normally? Any input would be appreciated.

Kelly,

Are you aware of injuring your foot? Diabetics are supposed to check their feet on a daily basis but I doubt any of us do that. If it is a bruise it should be gone in a few days. Since it is your little toe I wonder if you have injured it and if you could have broken it. It is actually quite common to do but it is painful. Also some fungal infections change the color of your nails. So if this has been there for a while and you don't have an acute injury perhaps you should see a podatrist to determine what this is. It is amazing how long it takes for foot injuries to heal once you are a diabetic.

Just some thoughts,

Mary Frances

Mary,

I got hurt 3 weeks ago, I jumped and landed on my foot.I had a very bad bruise on the arch. That really didn't hurt as bad as the ball of my foot. Right now it feels like little stones in there. (hence stone bruise) Thats what the doc at ER said. well its been 3 weeks now and it hurts just like the day I did it. How long does it take for that to heal. Im hypo, don't know if I should be worried about my feet like a diabetic should. should I be concerned?

Lilly,

It is going to take it 6 weeks to heal. Bone bruises heal at the same rate as a fracture. I forgot that you had posted what happened to your foot. What you are seeing is probably just residual blood from the original injury.

I am not sure that hypoglycemics need to check their feet like diabetics but probably isn't a bad idea to watch your feet more carefully than the ususal person. Have you noticed delayed healing from a cut or sore on your feet? If the answer is yes, than I would err on the side of caution and check you feet as often if not daily.
