She's always had bladder issues as in she wets the bed a lot and often has daytime accidents. She cannot feel that she has to go until she's really got to go and lots of the time it's too late. Since the initial dx I've done more research on the ADA's website, read the article in Time magazine which said if you have 1 of 7 symptoms you need to be checked. Well, she has 3 or 4 symptoms...the wetting, blurred vision, her sores don't heal well, and her blood sugars are up there, along with low insulin levels.
My pediatrician is to call me back sometime today...this has been a nightmarish struggle! Back and forth. I bought the Wal-Mart brand glucose machine to test her and ds at home. I would like for her tests to be repeated though. I just want to know if there is something going on with her, so we can stave it off if possible. My father had diabetes for over 15 years and recently passed in June from a heart attack...so I'm not taking much of this lightly! My dad's mom had diabetes (her feet were amputated) and she passed with heart conditions. Plus dh's maternal grandfather had diabetes and the siblings of his paternal grandmother have it. The nurse practioner blew me off and said her lifestyle just needs to be adjusted...I am not too sure what to do about that if they won't see her. Plus she's no where near overweight, she's a toothpick.
I would appreciate any feedback on what the heck I should do? Keeping pursuing till a get an answer? I don't want her to have it, but if she does then I want to be able to keep it from damaging her body so she can lead a healthy life. At this point, I don't even know if I can enroll her in soccer she so badly wants to play (already does 2 hrs of gymnastics).

Hi Margie and welcome to the board. I am
Margie,
I don't do that much with children and they are different than adults. History is really important in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes but much less so in the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The youngest type 2 diabetic is/was four years old but the hall mark of a type 2 diabetic in children is obesity. Since you say your daughter is thin she wouldn't be a type 1. I am not sure I understood. Was your son diagnosed diabetic? 150 on a 2 hr GTT indicated impaired glucose tolerance but not diabetes. Do you know what her fasting reading was? Any diagnosis would need to be confirmed with a second test, either a fasting blood glucose or another GTT.
By the time you read this you will have talked to the pediatrician again. What was the doctor's suggestion?
I think there are something with the bed wetting and clothing wetting that are not a diabetes issue. It is more behavioral. Some children just don't like to take the time to stop and go to the bathroom. They ignore the urge to go until it is too late. Once again they need to tune into their bodies and do something earlier and not later.
Please get back to us and tell what the doctor says. We are here to help in anyway we can.

First of all I can't believe a Doctor of any sort would diagnose your daughter with Diabetes in January and then just shrug her off. Her 200+ seems high to me. I agree with Michele to get another opinion. I believe Michele said also, Juvenile(Type 1) children are normally thin, or normal weight, correct. But if some thin run in your family that could be her also. I also agree with Denise to keep track of your Daughters exercise times, food intake, maybe things that upset her, etc. I know that is not easy with a child of ten since they always seem to be doing things that they can't remember exactly how long or what they ate elsewhere.
As far as wetting the bed, I don't think that has much to do with Juvenile(Type 1)
Diabetes. My Mom said I only wet the bed once after I was Trained and I remember that cause I was dreaming I was on the beach and I wet the bed, simple. Oh by the way, I've been a Diabetic since I was 3 1/2 yrs. My Sweet Daughter on the other hand does not have Diabetes(Knock on wood I test her often), but boy she wet the bed 'til she was about 11 1/2. A friend of mine had the same problem 'til she got her period at 12 yrs. And she quit wetting the bed. I didn't believe it 'til my Daughter got her period at 11 1/2 and she quit wetting the bed. I couldn't believe the coincidence. My Hubby also wet the bed until he was 11 1/2, then he started puberty, Ha. Not His Period. HHHHHMMMMMMMMM, I guess it is like a period to Guys! Who Knew???HA!! Sorry, OOOOPPPSSSS, I was just speculating!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's all in the genes with alot of good things, talents, green thumbs, creativity, epilepsy, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alcohlism, Smoking, Astigmatism, Parkinson's Disease, M.S. and so many other conditions and Diseases. If everyone looked back into all the condtions and diseases of their ancestors(which most people can't do because of (denial or lost of memory or I don't knows in the families), you would be surprised. But granted some are caused by environmental, and other reasons.
Sorry, for so long, chances are your DD will outgrow bedwetting when she gets her period. Some childrens bladders also do not grow as fast as they should(also in my daughters case because she was a Premmie due Nov.12 and she decided to make her entrance Sept. 27. They tried to keep her in with medication, but she wouldn't stand for it. And she is still stubborn sometimes today. LOL. Like I told my Hubby, Most people are ruled by the Man's family and ancestors on one wheel, the womans family and ancestors on another wheel, put all the good and bad of both into one wheel and your kids, their kids or the next kids, or the next kids are going to end up with the Roulette wheel of Life Good or Bad. Doesn't take a Rocket Scientist. That is in most conditions or diseases.
WE Sure HOPE YOUR SWEET DAUGHTER IS JUST FINE.....Big Hugs...***Carlie*** :)
