BS RISING??? after exercise

How is it possible for my blood sugar to RISE after 90 minutes of moderate to intense exercise. I do pawer yoga in a heated room 3x a week and I SWEAT and my heart rate gets going. When I do it on the weekends I take my fasting levels then if they are ok I exercise before eating (as is recommended with this yoga class) I bring my glucose tabs with me 'just in case' but I have never had a problem.

Today my fasting level was 96 and my level after exercise was 106. I know this is still great and in range but how can I gain sugar in my blood when literally all I have is water and a packet of sugar free (I double checked) electroyltes.

I will have to doube triple check to make sure there are no other carbs in there but I am almost postive the instrucor said no.

Is this an anaomaly?

Hi Michelle:

I did not hear if you were a Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetic and you did not mention what time of day you are doing your work-outs(Good for you, can't do you no wrong). Your levels are Great. But if you are not happy with them you are probably eating something earlier in the day or even the night before that is just leveling now during your exercise. I wouldn't complain, lucky you are exercising to level it out. Keep track of what you eat the night before and in the morning so you will know. Doing Great Girl!!!!

***Carlie*** I'm sure you're looking it also!!!!! :)

Carlie - Yea tell my quivering abs that it is great yipes that class was hard this morning. I am not too worried about it since I was still under 110. I know I am on oral meds so I feel like I am "cheating" to have such good levels most of the time but I also say if it ain;t broke don't fix it - meaning if the meds are working so be it!

Michelle, 96 and 106 are well within the accuracy limits of your meter, so don't be concerned. (The usual accuracy/precision limit of the glucose meters is +/- 10%.) Your results sound good to me!. Keep up the good work.

After I sent the first message, it dawned on me that you said "power yoga" in a deliberately hot room. After an hour sweating a lot, you might also be slightly dehydrated. Dehydration will cause your bG to go up; it's just a matter of the solutes in your blood being more concentrated due to loss of water.

Michelle,

What I am going to say is a little redundant but I have somethings to add to what everyone else has told you.

I agree with the variations in your meter and also with you having some dehydration. Here is my spin. What I think is going on is two things: First because of the length of exercise period I think your liver is converting some of your fat cells into glycogen: glycogensis.

Thanks Mary Francis - Iknow that with an exercise period that long that I need to be extra careful, especially where it is so intense. I test before I exercise and after, both immediately after and about an hour later. So far no hyper episodes!

The exercise feels great too. Thanks for reading and for helping out with the info.
