Who would you believe?

Just came back from my ob/gyn appointment today. Among other health issues we discussed, the topic of me taking glucophage came up. He asked why and and I told him because I was hypoglycemic (which he already knew)and the endo prescribed it. He said after looking at all my reports and b/s readings (since last May!), "No, you are hyperglycemic, you are a diabetic". Those words hit me like a ton of bricks. I told him that the endo didn't think so because I did not test with high enough glucose levels during the 3hr GTT etc. He said,"You are a diabetic, Jennifer". Wow. I had a feeling I was approaching this day at some time but thought with careful control I could delay and maybe prevent this. Should I believe him? I've gone to him for over 10 years and have only seen this endo 3 times before. What would you do?
Thanks for any input or suggestions. Part of me wants to say Okay enough already, you are a diabetic so get on with your life. Another part of me thinks could this be real - the endo says I'm not so I'm not. Ugh! You guys are so helpful as I know this probably happened to some of you....what did you do?
Thanks from my heart.
Jennifer

Jennifer,
I was also diagnosed by my OB-Gyn doctor and he referred me to the endocrinologist. Do you know the results of your last lab work? If you do, could you please post it?
Glucophage is now a first line drug in the treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, ie diabetes. I am not sure if the the same amount of drug is used for both conditions though. I have always heard that at least 40 percent of folks with hypoglycemia go on to become diabetic. I am wondering if the number isn't really higher than that. I bet that many of them have the new diagnosis of pre-diabetes.
I am going to my class at UC Davis on March 3rd and I am sure I will come back with the latest information which I will share as best I can.
Try to get some exercise and try to get your weight as close to normal as you can. This way you will be able to get your diabetes or pre-diabetes under control and prevent the development of complications.

Perhaps a consult with another endocrinologist would be worthwhile.
