BS levels and surgery

Hello ~

I will be going in for Breast Reduction surgery on March 4th! I have waited a long time for this and could not be happier to be getting it done. My question for you all is what do I need to do to prepare for surgery Diabetes wise.

I am type 2 and I take avandia and amaryl 1x a day and my numbers are generally pretty good. Mostly <110 at fasting 140-150 2 hours after meals and generally around 100 at other times.

Will the stress of surgery on my body increase or decrease my BS levels? I have talked to my doc and he suggested that I take my meds a bit later each day next week so that I am able to take them the evening before my surgery then I can take them in the evening after my surgery, rather than in the AM. Then to start moving them back so that I take them in the mornings (he says this is the best time for me).

Also I will not be able to do much exercise (even decent length walks for about 2 weeks at least) so other than cutting WAY back on my carbs and sugars is there anything else I can do to keep my bs levels stable?

Any advice suggestions would be appreciated.

Michelle S.

From what I've read, your sugars will go up, if for no other reason than the stress your body will be under during surgery and recovery.

Good luck with your surgery! I know how excited you must be. It shows in your website! I followed the link to your site and need to know what a blog is! I have been reading the site Put Down the Donut

You don't have very much time to see how it will affect you, but cinnamon tea helps to lower my bs. I boil some cinnamon sticks in water to make the tea, and sweeten it with Splenda. I also chew cinnamon gum and suck Atomic Fireballs. These things do help me, but YMMV. The best of luck to you and my prayers are with you. If you can work bay leaves in with your carbs (i.e. boiling any pasta with a bay leaf or two) seems to help too. Tumeric and paprika are also helpful. 2sweet02

Michelle,

Your blood sugar will go up after surgery because of the assualt to your body and the stress of general anesthesia. Talk to your anesthesiologist about your diabetic meds. You may be allowed to have some clear fluids (Apple Juice, broth or jello) at about 4 AM depending upon your blood sugar reading. If you aren't lucky enough to have your surgery the first thing in the morning, you may actually experience hypoglycemia from not eating. During surgery they most likely will use Lactated Ringers solution because it has no sugar in it. They will test your blood sugar and control it with IV insulin as needed. So you really don't have to worry about taking your diabetic meds. Your anesthesiologist will be able to explain this to you better when you have your pre-op visit or consultaion. Please make sure you ask all your questions.

I hope all goes well and I look forward to hearing from you again.

MY PS office is GREAT and scheduled me for the first surgery of the day at 7:40.....I will be sedated by 7:30 so I should be ok with my levels NOT going to low...I will check them around 10PM the night before and then eat something before midnight if I need to. My fasting levels have been pretty solid at right around 100-110.

Thanks for all the advice!

Michelle,

I am so glad to read that your surgery is going to be early in the morning. It is so miserable as a diabetic to wait until the afternoon to have your surgery.

Do remember to ask all your questions of your anesthesiologist as s/he is the one who will be in charge of managing your blood sugar pre surgery and during and after surgery.

Will you be discharged the same day as surgery? Sometimes here in my part of California they keep you over night.

Hope all goes well with you,Sun 2

I have an appointment with an anesthesisologist at my preop visit next Wednesday I am not sure if this is the SAME one I will have at my surgery but I know I will get to talk with the anesthesiologt the day of my surgery before he puts the IV in and will remind him then as well.

I am getting one overnight stay (which I am very glad about). I like the added "watching over" for the first day. My mom is goign to come nice and early to bring me my low carb breakfast.....just in case the special diet breakfast at the hopital is less than appealing... Hee hee.

Thanks for all your warm wishes I will keep you all posted as soon as I can after the surgery on the 4th.
