Circumcision question

I apologize in advance if this question offends anyone, but didn't know where else to ask it! My DH is 30 and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in October. He is uncircumcised and has had recurrent yeast infections since he was diagnosed. He has seen a urologist, who has recommended circumcision. I'm sure this is a rather common procedure but since it is new to us, we are obviously concerned!! Has anyone had any experience with this? He has lost 27 pounds since he was diagnosed, but still needs to lose another 20 or so pounds. His bs levels have been excellent since he's lost the weight. He is on Metformin. My main concern is - will he have trouble healing from this since he is diabetic? And will he be more prone to infection? We are just having a really hard time trying to justify if this needs to be done, the pros and cons, etc. I've already surfed the net and probably shouldn't have, because so much of what I've read about adult circumcision has scared me! If he needs to do this now for his overall health, I am all for it. Any advice, comments, etc.?

Well, a yeast infection in a male is just as difficult as with women. I had one for over a year, and my ob/gyn didn't even link it to diabetes. Darn!!!

At any rate, I sure would suggest talking to his endocrinologist about a med change. My yeast infection went away once I'd taken my Amaryl for two days...much to my relief, belive me.

A circumcision for an adult male is much more serious than for a baby. Any time you have diabetes you must take extra care with any surgery. This is not a minor procedure!

Hi Brenda, welcome to the board. I am one of the community leaders for this boars who has been a type 1 diabetic for over 28 years and have been on a insulin pump for over 6 years. Now what I tell you is strictly my opinion since I am no medical proffesional. As for circumcision in adults with diabetes I would think to ask his Endocrinologist about the cons and pros of this since that would be the best person to ask with all the questions you have concerning this area. I do know that diabetics in general are always more prone to infections and

Brenda,

While I am a nurse, this treatment to me sounds pretty drastic. If his blood sugar is under good control, and if so I don't see any reason to change his meds or add another one to the blood sugar regieme, then this is not causing the increased yeast infections.

I ask this gently, have you been checked? You can be passing the infection back and forth to each other. Perhaps cl-bugs2 would like to chime in here with her more learned opinion.

I extremely doubt that he would experience increased healing time or would need antibiotics. You usually experience the signifcantly increased healing time in those places where the blood supply is compromised by the diabetes. In grown men this is an extremely uncomfortable surgery that does lay them low for a few days. It truly isn't like when this surgery is done on newborns.

Please post your comments and questions and I am going to ask cl-bugs2 to chime in on this as this is her speciality. You will better understand when she answers.
