I was recently diagnosed with type II non insulin dependent and I was wondering if it is really necessary to wear a bracelet? I also take Glucophoge and one of the labels says to wear something that says I take that medication. Does anyone know anything about this?

thanks

Hi Ivlorriana,

Welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.

Actually all of us need some kind of identification on us that is readily found that identifies us as diabetic. That way if something untoward happens and emergency help is needed the rescurers know what they are dealing with. But I bet if you did a poll on the board most of us don't have anything! So

Hi, welcome tot he board. I ma one of the community leaders who has been a type 1 for over 28 years and on a insulin pump for over 6 years. I can only tell you that it is so vital to have a medical alert identificatin on you at all times, because people around you if by chance you are ever unable to help you can easily check this identification piece out to see what the problem might be, but also to let the emergency people coming to help you know what they are dealing with. I have had one for many years that has saved my life more times than I care to remember, but as of lately mine has become sharp on the outer edges that I need to purchase a new one and I will do just that so I can make my own designer band for it. So if I was you, get one as soon as possible just for yourself in knowing that you will be easily helped with one.

It is so great having you join us and I so look forward getting to know you better, which I know you will make so many new cyber friends in no time at all, like me. So don't you hesitate in asking any questions you may have, because I just know one of the members will be able to answer it for you or at least give you a link to find the answer to your question. I hope you enjoy the board and the conversations taking place on it, which you are more than welcome to add your very own conversation any time you feel like it. Take care and do have a wonderful day!

Hi Mary Frances,

Speaking of ID bracelets, I just found out that it's suggested that people who have a gastric bypass should wear an ID bracelet as well. Now that's a good idea!

So many people are having stapling or other procedures. It's scarey to me, that's for sure!

Hope your weekend is wonderful and that the numbers go back within normal limits really soon!

There's some excellent links in response to my message about the id bracelets. Go look at them. One is www.laurenshope.com. Kind of expensive, but you'll get the idea. Also, Walgreen's sells one so there might be other places locally where you can get one fairly inexpensively. Also, the January 2004 issue of "Diabetes Forecast" has listings of products including the bracelets. You can view it by going to www.diabetes.org, checking the link for that magazine, and then selecting past issues.

Good luck.
