PreDiabetic

Hi..Just got results from my second A1C. My pcp stated "pre-diabetic..but good control". First blood work was in Sept. Fasting = 128; A1C = 6.0. On Feb 20th,
fasting = 113; A1C = 6.0.As a pre-diabetic, will I have the hypo/hyper episodes as a diabetic. I guess my question is - will I be symptomatic or do I have to be a diabetic to get the sleepies/jitters? I have brother, 2 sisters and Dad w/ diabetes. I had gestation diabetes before my 1st OB appt w/ my last baby (he'll be 5 next month). Since my first test back in Sept, I have made a conscious effort to reduce carbs/sugars.

Hi there -
As another pre-diabetic, I can only tell you my experience and what my doctor has told me. Since I am not on any kind of medication - controlling sugars with diet and exercise alone, he told me that I am at no more risk for a low than a non-diabetic (I think eveyone gets the "I'm so hungry" shakes once in a blue moon...). As for high sugars. Sure, if you eat inappropriately, your sugar can go high. Of course if that happens often, the diagnosis changes to diabetic from pre-diabetic. Do you have a meter? I check my sugars religiously after lunch and dinner to make sure that I am within the guidelines (easier for pre-diabetics to manage than diabetics, I think) of under 140 2 hours after eating. Occasionally I check my fasting and after breakfast numbers (I'd check those more often, but I don't seem to have problems with those numbers usually - for fasting a non-diabetic is under 110 and I usually run in the 80's and 90's - prediabetic is usually between 110 and 125 - over 125 on two or more random fasting readings means diabetic). My readings have been low enough that my last A1C was 5.2 and my doc was pleased...
I'd say keep the diet good, get plenty of exercise and check your sugars as much as you can. Good luck and keep joining our conversation.

Boy, this is the pot calling the kettle black! EXERCISE, EXERCISE (walking is great), and more EXERCISE is what will help lots.
This is a good board for you. The CL's are super! The members are very supportive.
:-)
Vickie,
Hi! My anme is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice. Both my husband and I are type 2 diabetics!
It is Hashimoto Disease. This is the most common form of hypothyroidism and it is an autoimmune disease. It is normally treated with thyroid replacement hormones.
I hope you are testing your blood sugar since many pre-diabetics go one to become diabetic. But a loss of 10% of your weight can usually bring this under control. Eating a meal plan similar to your husband's will help. But please don't eat as much as he is supposed to eat. What needs to happen is for you to be referred to a dietitian to assistance in planning your eating. But I have found that when people are put on a diabetic eating regieme that they lose weight successfully. It is because of the limiting of carbohydrates and the rearrangement of how you eat them. Exercise is vitally important also. Since you have such a strong family history of type 2 diabetes I hope you are being checked annually
You are right. I feel very stupid about the "Hashimoto" thyroid problem. I knew when I called it Hiroshima it didn't sound right, but close. Like I said I didn't remember much about it. I even had forgotten that my doctor told me 2 years ago that I had it until he reminded me a week ago. Any way I attended a diatery class with my husband and the diatician told him that he could have 180 to 200 carbs daily, but said that I should have only about 150. I also got a plan off the internet for 1200 calorie diabetic meal plan and worked with it to fit my lifestyle and work habits. I've been doing it for 3 days so far and it hasn't really been that difficult. I also have psorisis and psoractic artheritis, which also has something to do with my immune system. I'm not sure about the spelling of some of these words so forgive me. Thanks for the advice.
