Topomax medication question

Hi, recently my Ob/Gyn prescribed Topomax to help me lose weight and also help with migraines. The literature from the pharamacy said it can increase glucose readings in urine. My internist M.D. says that no, Topomax does not affect glucose readings. I've been doing a very low-carb diet but my a.m. meter readings have been in the 170s despite my walking and low-carb eating. Does anyone know anything about Topomax and its affect on glucose readings? Thanks.

Hi,
Because I don't this drug, I looked Topomax up in the Physician's Desk Reference which is their bible for drugs. Topomax is an anti-epileptic drug. There is a weight loss factor with this drug as it causes anorexia. There is a problem with taking this drug with metformin which isn't understood. Also a rare side effect of this drug is diabetes type 2. But I didn't see anything about sugar in the urine. I also didn't see anything about it helping with migraines but that is possible because many of the anti epileptic drugs do help.
It would appear that your diabetes isn't under control yet. The goal for a fasting blood sugar is 90-120. This is the new goal as of January this year.
I am not sure that the treatment with this drug isn't worse than the disease. And I am really concerned because they don't understand the interaction with metformin which cause both drugs to be have strangely.
I think a referral to a dietitian who specializes in diabetes to help develop an individualized eating plan would be more worthwhile.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
